Ladies and gentlemen, it might be time to head down to the Fanattic and grab a jersey. According to multiple reports, the Calgary Flames are close to a deal with hockey legend (and right wing) Jaromir Jagr.
UPDATE: Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the deal is done.
Jagr, 45, is a native of Kladno, Czech Republic and the second-highest scoring player in the entire history of the National Hockey League. He has 765 goals and 1,914 points in 1,711 NHL games – spanning stints with Pittsburgh, Washington, the NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Dallas, Boston, New Jersey and Florida. He also left for three season, during his prime, to play for Avangard Omsk in the KHL. He has two Stanley Cup rings and was the NHL’s leading scorer on five different occasions.
He had 16 goals and 46 points last season with Florida, which (if replicated) would’ve placed him sixth on the Flames in scoring (just between Matthew Tkachuk and Michael Frolik). For a team that’s concerned about scoring and seemingly had some concerns about offensive depth, adding Jagr is a no-brainer. Adding him for such a pittance – a $1 million base salary would drop their available cap for the rest of the season to $1.99 million – is a steal.
We’ll have more on this as it develops.
