The dust has settled and the trade deadline moving and shaking has been completed. So, just who the heck are the players who will try to get the Calgary Flames back to the post-season?
Here’s a quick snapshot, pals.
The Flames started the day with 23 players on their roster. Here’s how the day went:
  • Buddy Robinson was assigned to the Stockton Heat.
  • Derek Forbort was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings.
  • Erik Gustafsson was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks.
  • Brandon Davidson was traded to the San Jose Sharks.
  • Alexander Yelesin was assigned to the Stockton Heat.
  • While not yet announced by the club, the NHL media roster database indicates that Oliver Kylington and Dillon Dube were assigned to the Stockton Heat.
After all these moves, the Flames have a 20-man active roster – the minimum they’re able to have:
  • Goalies (2): David Rittich and Cam Talbot
  • Defensemen (6): Rasmus Andersson, TJ Brodie, Michael Stone, Noah Hanifin, Erik Gustafsson and Derek Forbort
  • Forwards (12): Derek Ryan, Mikael Backlund, Johnny Gaudreau, Tobias Rieder, Milan Lucic, Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, Elias Lindholm, Zac Rinaldo, Mark Jankowski, Andrew Mangiapane and Sam Bennett
Based on Brad Treliving’s media comments – specifically, commenting to Sportsnet 960 The Fan’s Pat Steinberg that the “paper transactions” to keep players AHL playoff eligible would be announced on Tuesday morning – we’re pretty confident that the unannounced moves for Kylington and Dube are paper moves and they’ll be on the active roster tomorrow.
Three more players are currently on the injury reserve list: Mark Giordano, Travis Hamonic and Juuso Valimaki. They don’t count against the roster limit. But since the roster limit is gone now, the Flames won’t need to do anything to open a roster spot when Giordano is ready to play.
Cap-wise, the Flames have a combined cap hit right now (via PuckPedia) – including Yelesin, Dube and Kylington – of $81.025 million. (It’ll be a little bit less than that once you factor in the late assignments to the minors.) They have a tiny bit of cap wiggle room to handle recalls and injuries, just shy of $475,000.
