Season over, Flames return five call-ups to the Stockton Heat

8 years agoThe Calgary Flames finished their 2015-16 season last night in Minnesota. Since there are no longer games left to be played, the Flames are no longer in an emergency roster situation. And since the emergency situation is over, the team officially announced earlier today they’ve returned five players – all up on emergency recalls – to the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.
So farewell (for now) to defensemen Oliver Kylington and Patrick Sieloff and forwards Drew Shore, Turner Elson and Hunter Shinkaruk. They’ll rejoin a Heat club that’s desperately trying to stay alive in a playoff race and will be stoked about the additions.
Not heading back to the AHL are Joni Ortio and Derek Grant (both eligible but requiring waivers to go back) and Jakub Nakladal (who wasn’t on the Heat’s playoff roster).
So how did these call-ups do in their brief NHL shots?
- Kylington, 18, made his NHL debut yesterday and played 17:22.
- Sieloff, 21, made his NHL debut yesterday and had the game-winning goal and a minor penalty in 17:59.
- Shore, 25, had an assist in two games with the Flames.
- Elson, 23, had an assist in his NHL debut yesterday (he played 14:54).
- Shinkaruk, 21, had two goals and an assist in seven games with the Flames.
We’ll have more on the call-ups’ performances in the coming days, but Shinkaruk easily made the best impression in his brief appearance. But nobody looked horrible, which was probably the fear in bringing up NHL newbies in meaningless games late in the season.
According to an e-mail exchange with the team’s communications staff, Kylington, Sieloff and Elson are expected to be available for today’s Heat game with the San Diego Gulls.
