Sveningsson on Sweden’s WJC camp roster, Zavgorodniy not on Russia’s

As the calendar moves firmly into December, we’re starting to get chatter about 2019 World Junior Championship rosters. So far, there’s good news and bad news regarding Calgary Flames prospects and this year’s tournament.

Prospect Filip Sveningsson has been named to Sweden’s training camp roster for the World Juniors. He’s one of 14 forwards on the camp roster – 15 if you count Anaheim prospect Isac Lundestrom, who would need to be loaned by the Ducks farm team to participate – and so he’ll need to survive a couple cuts up front. Originally the Flames’ seventh round selection at the 2017 NHL Draft, Sveningsson has been very good for IK Oskarshamn in Sweden’s secondary pro league this season.

Meanwhile, Flames prospect Dmitry Zavgorodniy was not on the preliminary Russian roster. He’s an August 2000 birthday – meaning he’s been 18 for less than four months – and the Russians are sending a delegation that’s primarily 1999-born players (19-year-olds). If Zavgorodniy continues doing what he’s doing, it’s inevitable that we’ll see him on the Russian squad next winter when he’s a 19-year-old himself.

The Slovakian national team has announced their “domestic roster” – they do a camp with European-based players before they come to North America for the tournament – and so news regarding potential World Junior forwards Milos Roman, Martin Pospisil and Adam Ruzicka should come out sometime next week.

The 2019 World Juniors take place Dec. 26, 2018 through Jan. 5, 2019 in scenic Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
