Throwback Thursday: On this day in 2010, Calgary Flames beat New Jersey Devils 5-3

Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!

On this day in 2010, the Calgary Flames broke out of a scoring slump and beat the New Jersey Devils 5-3.

The Flames had struggled to score, The Record’s Tom Gulitti wrote the Flames had scored more than two goals only six times in their last 18 games and were shutout four times over that span.

Calgary built up a 5-1 lead up until halfway through the third period in thanks to goals from Daymond Langkow, Curtis Glengross, Eric Nystrom, Matt Stajan and David Moss. In fact, 11 Flames got one-point, but nobody had more than that.

For head coach Brent Sutter, it was his first game against the Devils who he had coached for the two previous years and according to Gulitti, Sutter downplayed the matchup.

“I’m not getting caught up in the other stuff,” Sutter said. “I know I coached there for two years and that was a tremendous honour to do so, but I’m coaching the Calgary Flames now and obviously we’re in a situation here with our team that we need to find ways to win hockey games and that’s been my focus.”

Scoring goals was an issue for the Flames that year, who potted only 204 ranking last in the league, but with 210 goals against that ranked 6th, Calgary fought for a 40-32-10 record that saw them still miss the playoffs by five points.
