Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!
This week in 2001, the Calgary Flames and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim combined for a total of 309 penalty minutes.
The game had been rather tame for the first two period, but things started to get carried away when the third rolled around.
Already up 3-0, Anaheim potted their fourth and the 15:10 mark then things got crazy.
Flames winger Craig Berube laid a hit on Ducks goalie J-S Gigure behind the net at the 15:44 mark and less than three minutes later, Anaheim forward Kevin Sawyer took a blatent run at Flames goalie Mike Vernon.
And without a moment’s notice, the game turned into something remenicent of a WWE cage match. Off every faceoff for the final minue and a half of the game, players fought and were swiftly ejected before there was all but one player on each clubs bench.
In total, the two clubs racked up a record number of penalty minutes and a fair share bad blood.
Following the, the Flames were fined $25,000 while Craig Berube was suspended for three games. Scott Nichol and Flames bench boss Greg Gilbert each got two game suspensions.
In Anaheim, Sawyer was suspended for five games while Ruslan Salei and Gigure each were suspended $1,000.
