What will the Flames playoff roster look like?

It’s beginning to sound like we’re actually going to have hockey, potentially beginning in mid-to-late July. When the league returns, it’ll be time for the teams to amp up for the the playoffs. So it’s probably not crazy to start wondering what the Calgary Flames’ roster might look like when hockey does kick back off.

Let’s presume that the league goes with the oft-rumoured expanded 30 player active roster for the post-season.

The Flames carried 24 active players as of the season’s stoppage on March 12.

That’s two goalies, nine defensemen and 13 forwards. (Juuso Valimaki was considered a non-roster injured player.) So that leaves six spots open.

In goal it seems likely that the Flames carry a trio, so we’ll probably see one body added. With Jon Gillies a pending free agent, it seems likely that either Artyom Zagidulin or Tyler Parsons get the nod. (I’d lean Parsons.)

On defense, the the Flames are carrying three extra bodies already. Most likely they add at most one more player. It’s either Alexander Yelesin or Juuso Valimaki. (We’ll get into the implications of the Valimaki factor later.)

Up front, depending on the blueline decision there are four or five open spots. Glenn Gawdin and Matthew Phillips seem like locks. Behind them it seems likely that one (or both) of Jakob Pelletier or Dmitry Zavgorodniy would get a look-see as a developmental experience, too. After that it likely depends on how the Flames want to handle their pending UFAs: Austin Czarnik and Alan Quine could be solid depth pieces. If there’s a spot open, Luke Philp is arguably next up. (It’s a very right shot heavy group.)
