It’s a drama-filled Around the NHL!
As you may know, the Boston Bruins are in a sticky situation with starting goaltender Jeremy Swayman. Moreover, the Montréal Canadiens had two players suffer a knee injury in Saturday’s game.
Let’s take a look at that in the latest Around the NHL.

The latest with Boston

On Monday, Boston Bruins president Cam Neely said: “I have 64 million reasons why I’d be playing right now” regarding contract negotiations with star netminder, Jeremy Swayman.
Later that day, Swayman’s agent Lewis Gross released a statement noting that the two parties never reached $64 million in negotiations and that he and Swayman take a few days to decide where to go from there.
It was reported by Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli on Tuesday’s edition of Morning Cuppa Hockey that Swayman was offered $62.4 million for eight seasons, carrying an annual cap hit of $7.8 million.
Still, it doesn’t seem ideal for the Bruins to burn bridges with Swayman, as they traded the 2022-23 Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark early in the off-season. Last season, Swayman had a .916 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average in 44 games. With the Ullmark trade, Swayman is likely to start the majority of the Bruins games when he eventually signs.
However, Swayman and the Bruins must agree to a deal before Dec. 1 or Swayman will be ineligible to play in the 2024-25 season.

Montréal Canadiens have two players with knee injuries

Shifting gears to injuries, and there seems to be a lot of them this preseason, two Montréal Canadiens players suffered knee injuries on Saturday.
According to the Canadiens’ Twitter account, prospect defenceman David Reinbacher underwent knee surgery on Tuesday morning and will be out for five to six months.
Moreover, star forward Patrik Laine will be out for two to three months with a knee injury. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Cédric Paré went knee-on-knee with the Canadiens forward, who needed help getting off the ice. Thankfully, Laine will avoid surgery and will instead rehab the injury.
Laine was selected second overall in the 2016 draft by the Winnipeg Jets, scoring a career-high 44 goals and 70 points during the 2017-18 season. Early in the 2020-21 season, Laine was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the third-overall pick in the same draft, Pierre-Luc Dubois. This past off-season, the Blue Jackets traded Laine and a 2026 second-round pick to the Canadiens for defenceman Jordan Harris.
As for Reinbacher, the right-shot defenceman was selected fifth overall in the 2023 draft. The 19-year-old was likely set to make his full-season North American debut with the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket.

Jimmy Vesey is out for a few weeks

Sticking to injuries, the New York Rangers have had several players suffer injuries this preseason. You can add a new player to the list, as forward Jimmy Vesey is out for a few weeks.
Last season, Vesey scored 13 goals and 26 points in 80 games with the Rangers, along with a goal and three points in 12 postseason games. He re-joined the Rangers before the 2022-23 season for his second stint but also has played for the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and New Jersey Devils.
This isn’t the first injury a Ranger roster player has suffered this preason. Superstar forward Artemi Panarin was listed a day-to-day, but he appears to be ready for action. Filip Chytil, who missed a large chunk of the 2023-24 season, was hit hard in open ice, leaving the game briefly before returning and even scoring.
In an ensuing fight, Ryan Lindgren suffered an upper-body injury and is currently listed as week-to-week.
