The Calgary Flames win streak will end at four after a goaltender driven, low event, mistake filled match against the Seattle Kraken.
CF% – 57.33% || SCF% – 73.33% || HDCF% – 76.15% || xGF% – 73.86%
It’s a Team Game – I strongly believe the numbers here do not reflect the final result at all. The Kraken gained a lot of momentum every time they had a power play and Calgary kept making plays at the end of the game that baffled me. Mantha and Pospisil not being as hard on the forecheck as they have been all year, the defenceman constantly passing to nobody or trying to stretch it out through the neutral zone only to miss and get an icing, and the final play that caused the turnover in overtime. It all just ended up being a waste of a spectacular appearance by Dan Vladar – chaotic at times – but spectacular. Calgary’s 5v5 strength still drove them to a point and they do remain undefeated in regulation.
Corsi King – Nazem Kadri (67.19 CF%) may want that last play back, but prior to that series of unfortunate events Kadri was doing a lot to drive his line into some scoring chances. Matt Coronato (64.84 per cent) had a strong game next to the veteran pivot getting involved in plenty of goalmouth scrambles and quality opportunities. Rasmus Andersson (59.19 per cent) was someone else that stood out to me – he made a lot of smart plays late to help get the puck in deep without an icing. He’s been playing at a high level to start the season.
Under Pressure –
Taken By Chance – At 5v5 (SVA) Nazem Kadri (81.94 SCF% || 100 HDCF%) never saw a high danger chance against while being involved in six himself. The real kings of the high danger chance battle was the Flames third defence pair. Brayden Pachal (81.87 per cent || 90.17 per cent) and Jake Bean (81.87 per cent || 90.17 per cent) aided in over 8 high danger looks while only seeing one against. Joey Daccord deserves his flowers too – he was exceptional stopping some Flames point blank, multiple times in a row. Calgary was still strong at getting to the crease during 5v5 play, but Daccord had their number.
xG Breakdown –
xGF% – Leading the group here is Matt Coronato (86.31 per cent). He was buzzing around the offensive zone all game long – just could not get the goal. Mikael Backlund (81.09 per cent) and his line were on the positive side of things at 5v5 as well. I frequently noticed Connor Zary (74.17 per cent) with control of the puck in deep. The line I felt was not going tonight was the Martin Pospisil (21.45 per cent). They did not have their usual pop and were very light on time spent attacking.

In The Crease – Dan Vladar deserved better, but the cruel sport of hockey took this one away from him. He can’t prevent the turnovers that happen in front of him and – when hung out to dry like he was – I don’t put any blame on him for it either. As the game was in its final minutes the Flames started turning the puck over at an alarming rate, the only reason the point was achieved was because of his strong play. He had a 5v5 shutout and only got scored on when the Flames had 3 skaters on the ice. A 5-on-3 powerplay goal against and the 3-on-3 overtime goal. He deserved some run support, but Joey Daccord would not allow for it. 1.06 expected goals against at 5v5 with zero getting behind him.
Here are some of the great saves Dan Vladar has made tonight.

Player Spotlight – Anthony Mantha – He comes to Calgary on a one-year deal looking to shuck a previous reputation he had developed. I believe tonight that issue reared its head and showed up as he went from being a force that could will his way through traffic into someone that would barely make contact in the corners. He had one hit and two blocked shots and that was it for him tonight. We’ll see going forward which guy we get more often, because we’ve seen both now. Do we get the Mantha that battled in the fight back against Vancouver or are we going to get the passive performance from tonight. Personally, I think Calgary has the right people in the locker room to get him consistently to the Vancouver level.
