As we get higher in the ranks of our summer prospect rankings we start to get into some real exciting prospects that are poised for big years. Nobody in this pool is poised to turn some unsuspecting heads quite like the seventh-ranked prospect, University of Michigan defenceman Henry Mews.

Drafted in the third round (74th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Henry Mews, since he’s been drafted, has always been a defenceman loaded with skill. He navigates the back-end with confidence and poise and likes to help add offence to the attack.

He came up through Canadian AAA in Ontario, having enough success to earn the seventh overall selection in the 2022 OHL Priority Draft by his hometown Ottawa 67’s. Mews would debut next season making an immediate impact with 12 goals and 31 points in 55 games. Lots of players his age are playing at lower levels, but Mews was in the OHL and producing early.

His draft year, he continued to build. 61 points in 65 games, keeping up with double digit goals. Mews profiled like a player that should have been selected a lot higher than where he was taken. After the third round selection by the Flames in the 2024 NHL Draft it was on him to showcase to the world what he could be.

Mews then took another step in his final year in the OHL. Despite getting traded to Sudbury mid-season he was able to keep his production above a point-per-game. His vision transitioning the play up the ice and his ability to command the offensive zone with possession had developed quite nicely. This caught the attention of Michigan in the NCAA who recruited Mews services for the 2025-26 season.

After the season got up and running Mews, a freshman, was given the reins to run PP1 for a program with national championship ambitions in Michigan. A testament to his offensive skillset. He was able to rack up a 3 assist game and 9 assists in 10 total games before an unfortunate knee injury ended his season early.

A 0.9 point-per-game ratio would have seen Mews earn 35 points over Michigan’s 39 game run. The only Hobey Baker finalist that was a defenceman, Eric Pohlkamp (22 years old), had 39 points in 43 games to lead the NCAA in points for a defenceman. Mews was poised for what could have been a massive freshman season and unfortunately lost it.

With the other breakouts from forwards in Ethan Wyttenbach and Cole Reschny, Mew’s shortened season could be forgotten about, but most certainly should not.

We reached out to Sophie Matthews of the Michigan Daily for a closer look at Mews:

Personally, Henry Mews was one of my favorite players to watch last season. Despite being a freshman, Mews already demonstrated his confidence with the puck. When watching him, you could tell that he saw the ice in a way others couldn’t, making him such a valuable asset on defense. He could easily get things going in the neutral zone and help Michigan have a scoring chance. Mews was the epitome of an offensive defenseman — something Michigan’s known for producing with players like Zach Werenski and Quinn Hughes. He was the anchor to Michigan’s top power play, and it visibly struggled while adjusting to his absence. It was unfortunate to see his season cut so short, but around the rink, he was doing whatever he could — running the stairs, participating in the dynamic warm ups, etc. He was clearly motivated to get back on the ice and ensure that he was ready to go for the upcoming year.

Expectations for 2026-27

I don’t actually envision Mews getting the same PP1 time he was going to get this year as he has to share that spot with an incoming player with an even higher profile. Top 2027 NHL Draft prospect Landon DuPont will also be in Michigan, and it’s reasonable to expect that alone will impact things.

I would still expect Mews to be able to produce over 30 points and keep up a 0.75 point-per-game pace this season. He’s talented and the inclusion of another talented player, despite playing the same position, shouldn’t nerf his production too much. He’s still going to play over 20 minutes a night and be relied on heavily at 5v5.

If Mews does have a quality season there could be talk of a contract at the end of the season, but there’s no rush as he can return for a junior season if need be. If they do sign him they could give him valuable time in the AHL too, running the power play units there while the Flames figure out how Zayne Parekh, Simon Nemec, and Hunter Brzustewicz work out in the NHL.

They don’t need to rush, but if Mews shows he’s ready for the next step they should be prepared to give it to him.
