We’re in the midst of our annual prospect rankings and profiles here at FlamesNation, and this was the toughest year ever when it came to balloting.

With 38 players eligible for the rankings, some really good players didn’t crack our top 20 that probably would have had prime spots in previous years. So with that in mind, we’re profiling everybody in the Calgary Flames’ prospect system.

Here are three more players that didn’t crack the top 20.

A standout at the St. Andrews College prep school, Lane spent a bit of time in the USHL (with Green Bay) and the OHL (with Brampton) before heading to Harvard University as an 18-year-old freshman last season.

As a few players in the Flames system did, Lane had a fairly typical freshman year. He played the right side of the second and third lines, primarily the third line, and got a little bit of special teams time. But he was generally a secondary player for his group, and was seventh in scoring on a low-scoring team as a freshman. All-in-all, he performed fairly well, and the hope is likely to see a bit of progression as a sophomore with a bigger role for the Crimson.

An offensive-minded blueliner, Bode Laylin was drafted after showing some nice progression across two seasons in the USHL with Tri-City. He wasn’t quite dominant, but he almost doubled his offensive output from year-to-year.

He’s headed to the WHL to play with the Everett Silvertips in 2026-27 and it’ll be interesting to how he adjusts to the different play-style and potential jump in competition. He’s committed to the University of St. Thomas for 2027-28, so he’s someone who probably has a longer runway in terms of his development. But so far, there are reasons for some optimism.

We’ve written about Simon Katolicky a bit already, as he’s kind of fascinating and it’s a bit surprising that he was available for the Flames to take in the fifth round. Simply put: Katolicky’s body of work prior to 2025-26 earned him some consideration as a potential first round draft choice… and then he had a really, really tough draft year – featuring mono, appendicitis and broken ribs – and he slid way down the draft rankings.

He’s headed to Sarnia of the OHL for 2026-27 and feels like a really savvy buy-low pick-up for the Flames. We’ll see if he can bounce back with the Sting.
