The Calgary Flames returned home after a six game road trip and performed well, beating the Utah Mammoth by a 4-1 score on Sunday night.
CF% – 46.16%|| SCF% – 53.71%|| HDCF% – 77.98%|| xGF% – 63.31%
It’s a Team Game – After six years of these my simple favourite category for the Flames to lead in is high danger chances. Overall, the number of attempts is great, as is quality of chances, but the amount of high danger chances you earn showcases how that game went for you and your line quite well. Calgary started things off against Utah with a 10-2 advantage in 5v5 high danger chances. They would end up with the advantage in that category for all three periods, finishing with a grand total of 14 to the opponents 4. Calgary got that early lead then was able to dictate a lot of play afterwards. The special teams still need some work, but the flashes of skill that could one day come together are there, it’s just not a finished product yet.
Corsi King – Morgan Frost (68.42 CF%) with a quality bounce back after a lull to end the road trip. That’s what you like to see to end the season. Some strong push in his play that suggests he can do it at this level for longer. He got a boost playing with two shooters in Matt Coronato (59.74 per cent) and Victor Olofsson (60.42 per cent). I loved Coronato’s goal because he never gives up on his pursuit of the puck which is how he got the space for that opportunity. Just yesterday I wanted to see him go back to generating his own space for opportunities so colour me happy.
Under Pressure –

Taken By Chance – All those high danger chances came courtesy of great play, and I mean great, from Zayne Parekh (53.10 SCF% // 72.74 HDDCF%). He had his best night as a professional hockey player with an 8-3 advantage in high danger chances, an assist, and over 20 minutes of positive, play-driving results. We saw flashes regularly, but this was a night where he played his off-side – with Whitecloud (55.16 per cent // 69.86 per cent) on the right – showing that he could excel in a game and really impact its outcome. tremendously positive sign to end the year which will surely bring about new hope for what next season could look like with a step forward in Parekh’s game.
xG Breakdown –

xGF% – No Matvei Gridin in this game so we have to get our rookie content from someone else up front. Aydar Suniev (26.39 per cent) made a nice play to set up Brayden Pachal (48.31 per cent) for his goal. Worked off some pressure to create enough space to make the good pass. Overall Suniev has shown improvement each game up in the pros, but has not done enough to suggest he’s ready to stick around every game. A good off-season and a great training camp could change that next year, but they have no reason to rush the young man. Another strong half to three-quarters of a season of Wranglers hockey is never a bad thing.
Game Flow –

Shot Heatmap –

In The Crease – Wolf made the good saves when he needed to and almost got things over the finish line to earn a shutout. That’s quite a few quality performances strung together now to end the season. It’s not been great overall, but the product in front of him has done nothing but diminish since he’s entered the league. As the build themselves back up with more quality pieces they’ll theoretically improve again at their ability to aid their goaltender in limiting opportunities. 1.72 expected goals against at 5v5 and just the one getting past him.
The Goals –
Another weird goal for the Flames. Blake Coleman crashes into Vítek Vaněček and Mikael Backlund puts the puck in. This goal is under review. 🎥: Sportsnet | #Flames
🔥FLAMES GOAL🔥 Aydar Suniev makes a great play to find an open Brayden Pachal who rips one past Vaněček That is Suniev's first point in the NHL! 🎥: Sportsnet | #Flames
Flash’s 3 Stars –
1) Zayne Parekh
2) Brayden Pachal
3) Matt Coronato
