Folks, welcome to the final day for trades for the 2024-25 NHL season. Thanks for joining FlamesNation for our continuing coverage of the 2025 NHL trade deadline, and for following along on the site for this live blog that we’ll update throughout the day.
9:00 a.m. MT update: It could be a pretty quiet day for the Calgary Flames, in pretty stark contract to the utter circus last year’s trade deadline was for first-year general manager Craig Conroy. A year ago, he had to navigate entering the regular season with five prominent unrestricted free agents to figure out. He ended up trading four of them (Elias Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin), with the fifth, Oliver Kylington, leaving via free agency.
This year? It’s been a lot calmer. The main piece of business seems to be completed already for Conroy, with the Jan. 30 swap of Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier (and some picks) to Philadelphia for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee. The Flames are thought to be poking around on some potential depth moves, but so far nothing definitive has shaped up on that front quite yet.
We’re also expecting some potential transactions to keep players available for the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers as they attempt to qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs. Ilya Solovyov was sent to the farm on Thursday, but we may also see Adam Klapka assigned to the AHL (at least on paper) so he could be a future option for the Wranglers.
We’ll see what else Friday brings us as the day unfolds.
9:15 a.m. MT update: The Flames hockey staff are scheduled to fly back from Dallas mid-morning to prepare for Saturday’s game with Montreal. The management staff are staying in Dallas through the trade deadline and should be flying home in the evening.
10:15 a.m. MT update: The first Flames move of the day has hit, assigning forward Adam Klapka to the AHL, likely to keep him eligible to play for the Wranglers over the rest of the season. It’s fairly likely that he’ll be called back up later today after the deadline.
Elsewhere, we’ve seen some former Flames moved already: Oliver Kylington was moved from Colorado to the New York Islanders in the Brock Nelson swap, then sent to Anaheim for future considerations on Thursday night. Andrei Kuzmenko has been traded from Philadelphia to Los Angeles.
11:15 a.m. MT update: While we wait for any big club moves, the Wranglers have made a couple roster moves. They’ve sent blueliner Charles Martin to the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush and called up forward Connor Mylymok from the Rush. Excluding Klapka and Solovyov, this would leave the Wranglers with two goalies, seven defencemen and 14 forwards as they head on the road. Sam Honzek is on the shelf with an injury, while Jarred Tinordi is done for the season.
12:15 p.m. MT update: We’re headed into the homestretch here, and it’s still quiet for the red team. Flames GM Craig Conroy did a hit on TSN where he reiterated that the team’s not looking for rentals. 45 minutes to go!
1:05 p.m. MT update: The trade deadline has passed. Our pal Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan is reporting that the Flames have nothing in the queue and are done for the day. GM Craig Conroy is slated to have a media conference call from Dallas shortly.
