Mark your calendars, Calgary Flames fans: the long goodbye begins on Oct. 1.

On Wednesday morning, the National Hockey League announced the fall home openers for its 32 member clubs as part of its two-part schedule reveal – the full schedule comes out on Thursday morning. As part of that announcement, they revealed that the Flames will open their 2026-27 regular season at home against the Seattle Kraken on Thu., Oct. 1.

The Flames will visit the Kraken for their home-opener on Sun., Oct. 4. That’ll be the second game of the season for the Flames, as the Saddledome hosts Wranglers games on Oct. 2 and 3, and a Hitmen game on Oct. 4.

The games with the Kraken kick off the first season under the new collective bargaining agreement, featuring an expanded 84 game regular season schedule. It’s also the 43rd and final season for the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome, as they’re slated to move a block and a half north to Scotia Place to begin the 2027-28 season. (Yes, 1983 to 2027 is 44 years, but there were no games in 2024-25 due to the lockout.) The Flames have been playing in the Saddledome since 1983-84, and to date the building has hosted 1,648 regular season NHL games – the ninth-most in NHL history. (They’ll pass Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena and Detroit’s Olympia and finish their run in the NHL in seventh place all-time.)

It’s the first time that the Flames have ever begun their regular season against the Kraken. It’s just the third time ever that they’ve begun their season on Oct. 1. They previously hosted the Detroit Red Wings to open 1997-98 and the Vancouver Canucks to begin 2009-10. They’ve never played a regular season game in September.

The full 2026-27 NHL schedule, including the other 82 games for the Flames, will be released on Thursday at 11 a.m. MT.
