The Calgary Flames did not have a great 2025-26 season. That’s not a secret or a controversial statement, and it’s reflected in the Flames’ appearances – or lack thereof – in National Hockey League year-end voting.
That said, the Flames are not a team devoid of good hockey players, and a handful of these good players did receive votes for a smattering of league awards during the voting conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Here’s a rundown of which Flames received votes, and what awards they received votes for.
Frank J. Selke Trophy
Presented annually “to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.”
The Selke is traditionally given to the top two-way forward in the NHL. The Flames have two two-way aces on their roster, and both of them received votes. Blake Coleman received a third-place vote and a fifth-place vote and finished 34th in balloting. It’s the third season he’s received Selke votes. Meanwhile, Mikael Backlund continued a long stretch where he’s received at least one Selke vote. He received one fifth-place vote, finished tied for 47th in balloting. It’s the ninth time in the past 10 years where he’s appeared on a Selke ballot.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
Presented annually “to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.”
A pair of Flames forwards – one long-term and one quite new – received fifth-place votes for the Lady Byng and finished tied for 79th place in balloting. One was Backlund, appearing on a Lady Byng ballot for the first time in his career, and the other was Victor Olofsson, receiving votes for the award for the fifth time in his career.
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
Presented annually “to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”
Backup netminder Devin Cooley, the Calgary PHWA chapter’s nominee for the Masterton, was one of 28 players receiving at least one vote – he receive one first-place vote, three second-place votes and three third-place votes. He did not finish as a finalist; the league doesn’t release an overall tally of Masterton balloting, so we don’t know precisely where he finished overall.
All-Rookie Team
The All-Rookie Team honours the top rookie goaltender, top two rookie defencemen and top three rookie forwards. Blueliner Yan Kuznetsov received one vote as a defenceman for the All-Rookie Team, but didn’t land on the team itself.
