In advance of Friday’s pre-season game in Edmonton, the Calgary Flames have made another round of cuts. The club announced that they’ve assigned 11 players to their AHL affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers.
Headed to the AHL camp are goaltenders Brad Arvanitis and Daniil Chechelev, defencemen Josh Brook, Simon Lavigne and Rhett Rhinehart, and forwards Calder Brooks, Lucas Feuk, Alex Gallant, Rory Kerins, Matt Marcinew and Ilya Nikolaev.
Of the 11 players cut from camp, nine weren’t under NHL deals of any kind and aren’t able to make the NHL club. Only two – Kerins and Nikolaev – are on active NHL deals, and with both entering their very first season in the entry level system neither player was going to crack the NHL roster. They’ll get an early start at Wranglers camp.
Following these cuts, 46 players remain on the camp roster: four goaltenders, 15 defencemen and 27 forwards. More interesting of those 46 players in camp are five players without NHL deals: Brett Sutter, Mitch McLain, Sonny Milano, Cody Eakin and Michael Stone. (Sutter and McLain are on AHL contracts, while Milano, Eakin and Stone are on pro try-outs.)
The Flames continue their pre-season schedule on Friday night when they visit the Edmonton Oilers.
