Flames roster news: Devin Cooley activated from injury reserve, Arsenii Sergeev assigned to AHL’s Wranglers

Thursday was a travel day for the Calgary Flames after they finished off a three game road trip on Wednesday night in Seattle. But it was not without some news, as the club announced the assignment of goaltender Arsenii Sergeev to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers. In tandem with that move, the club activated goaltender Devin Cooley from the injury reserve list.
Cooley was injured back on Oct. 28 against the Edmonton Oilers when Colton Dach crashed into him at the very end of the first period. Cooley finished the period, but was replaced by Dustin Wolf for the remainder of the game. Cooley was placed on the injury reserve a couple days after his injury, and Thursday was the first day he would have been eligible for activation.
While Cooley was away, Sergeev, the Wranglers’ starter, got an opportunity to practice with the big club. He played his second NHL game on Saturday, allowing five goals against the powerhouse Colorado Avalanche and generally looking quite good in the process. He’ll return to the AHL after a week in the NHL, and he’s rejoining a Wranglers team that played just once in his absence. The AHL schedule is fairly weird and weekend-heavy, but it allowed him to get some NHL reps, give Cooley a breather, and not really miss much action with his AHL group.
Given that Cooley missed a week and that Thursday was a travel day for the team with no practice time, we wouldn’t expect to see Cooley in net when the Flames host Anaheim on Friday night, but he probably becomes an option starting on Sunday when Philadelphia visits. In Cooley’s absence Wolf made three starts, picking up wins over Seattle and San Jose and an overtime loss against Seattle.
With the roster moves, the Flames have a 23-man active roster: two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. Two players remain on the injury reserve list: Jonathan Huberdeau and Sam Honzek.
