In the final instalment of our milestone watch, we take a look at what milestones are ahead for Calgary Flames defencemen and goaltenders.

MacKenzie Weegar

Weegar is only 31 games away from hitting 500 in his NHL career. He has played 306 with of those games with the Florida Panthers. And he’ll need 194 games played with the Flames to get to 500.
It’s a significant milestone for Weegar to hit because he was a seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft. Only six defencemen have been drafted in the seventh round from the 2000-13 NHL drafts, that have played in at least 500 NHL games. That list includes Johnny Oduya, Matt Hunwick, Anton Stralman, Carl Gunnarsson, Justin Braun and Jason Demers.
Weegar was a late bloomer in is pro career. He wasn’t a full time NHLer until he was 24 years old in the 2017-18 season. But since then, he has done nothing but continuously improve and has become one of the 30 best defencemen in the NHL.
He set a career high in goals and points last season with the Flames. Can he build on that? Or was that just a career year?

Rasmus Andersson

Like Weegar, Rasmus Andersson is also closing in on playing in his 500th career game. He only needs to play in 45 games, a little over half the 2024-25 season, to hit that personal milestone. And he would play in every one of those games as a member of the Calgary Flames.
If Andersson plays in all 82 games next season, he will move into 19th place on the Calgary Flames all time games played list passing the likes of Lanny McDonald, Craig Conroy and Guy Chouinard.
Andersson is also only 36 assists away from hitting the 200-assist mark in his career. He starts the season with 164 assists which is 8th on the Flames all time defencemen scoring list. If he can produce 36 assists next season, he’ll pass both Jamie Macoun and Phil Housley.
Overall, Andersson has become one of the best defencemen to play for the Calgary Flames franchise. The numbers show it. Among Flames’ defencemen, Andersson is 8th in games played and assists, 9th in points, and 11th in goals. He is well on his way to working his way up every one of those records in the 2024-25 season and beyond.

Dan Vladar

Vladar is not closing in on any major milestones. He is 25 starts away from 100 in his NHL career.
The reason this is interesting is because the lack of experience in the Flames crease next season. Between Vladar, Dustin Wolf, and Devin Cooley, they have a combined 99 starts, 47 wins and two shutouts.
That would have been the second least experienced group of goalies (Buffalo was last) in the 2023-24 season. That is one of the main reasons why the Flames are +7,500 underdogs to win the Stanley Cup, which are the sixth-worst odds in the NHL as of July 23.
