Big bodies win playoff games.
If the Vegas Golden Knights win their second Stanley Cup in franchise history, Brett Howden is one of the favourites to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. Drafted 27th overall in 2016, it took the Manitoba native a while to find his footing in the National Hockey League, only reaching the double-digit goal mark for the first time in 2024-25.
His 23 goals and 40 points in 80 games last season appeared to be a fluke, as he scored just 12 goals and 22 points in 58 games this season. But the 6’2”, 201 lbs has exploded for 14 goals and 18 points in 20 games.
The Flames have the sixth overall pick, and there’s a good chance they’ll draft an impact player. However, finding goal scoring depth, someone like Howden, should be a goal with one of their second-round picks.
One player who has the makings of a bottom six forward is Casey Mutryn, who’ll surely go somewhere in the second round.
What do scouts think of Casey Mutryn?
Mutryn was born in the small town of Norwell, Massachusetts, south of Boston. He’s capable of playing both wing and centre, and stands at 6’3”, 200 lbs. He’s the younger brother of Teddy Mutryn, who was selected 95th overall by the San Jose Sharks in last season’s draft.
Ranked 35th, this is what Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff had to say about Mutryn in his most recent draft ranking.
“Mutryn was one of my favorite American-born prospects this season. I like his physicality and work ethic and think that could allow him to be a decent third-liner. He’s smart, battles hard and has the ability to find chemistry with just about everyone. Although I don’t think his ceiling is that high, I feel confident Mutryn will be an NHLer. Most likely as a third- or fourth-liner who can grind it out and win most of his battles, but he’ll be a good one at that. He’s the type of guy every team wants come playoff time.”
Sportsnet’s Jason Bukala ranked Mutryn as his 40th-best prospect in his final rankings, having this to say about the large forward.
“Mutryn is a power winger who battles at the net front and extends plays in the hard areas of the ice. He contributed 2G-3A in five games at the U18 World Championship. I appreciate Mutryn’s overall character. He’s a team first prospect who was whistled for 87 penalty minutes. Mutryn is headed to Boston College next season.”
Lastly, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler ranked Mutryn near the end of the second round, coming in as his 54th-best draft prospect. Here’s what Wheeler said about Mutryn.
“A July 2008 birthday, he has a pro frame already and a strong skating stride. He’s committed to Boston College, plays a committed two-way game and is competitive. He’s quite physical, regularly knocking opposing players over. His wall play and cycle game are both effective. He has learned to play the net front on the PP well over the last two years and shows some touch and feel around the net and sliding passes through the crease. Mutryn’s offense and playmaking aren’t ever going to be defining attributes but he just looks like he’s going to be a bottom-six NHLer. He’ll make the occasional play at pace as well.”
How did Casey Mutryn produce in 2025-26?
Most of Mutryn’s 2025-26 season was spent with the U.S. National Development Team’s U18 team, where he scored 18 goals and 46 points in 62 games, alongside 89 penalty minutes and a -10. He got a cup of tea in the United States Hockey League, where he scored seven goals and 16 points, spending the entire season as a 17-year-old.
Mutryn’s 2025-26 season was similar to his last, splitting his time between the team’s U17, U18, and USHL teams. In the USHL, the forward scored 11 goals and 17 goals in 33 games, so he saw an increase in point-per-game this season, but his goal-per-game pace slowed down.
The forward captained Team USA’s U18 World Championship team earlier this spring, scoring twice and finishing with five points in five games, tied for fourth in points on the team. Unfortunately, Team USA were bounced in the quarterfinals.
Mutryn is committed to play for Boston College.
Could Casey Mutryn be a fit with the Calgary Flames?
Most publications have Mutryn ranked around 40th, which is perfect for the Flames since they’ll have either the 30th or 31st overall pick (via Vegas), the 35th overall pick, and the 36th overall pick. If he is to fall 10 spots, the Flames also have the 51st overall pick. They have a lot of flexibility with all the seconds, so if they want him, they can easily get him.
At the end of the day, it comes down to fit. There’s a lot to like regarding his physicality, compete level, and two-way game, but he will more than likely be a long-term project. The floor is higher than the ceiling, which may not be what the Flames are looking for with their picks in the 30s. That said, if he falls to one of their picks in the 50s, picking up a forward with the floor of a bottom six player is not a bad option.
