The 2027 edition of the IIHF’s World Junior Championships will unfold in Edmonton and Red Deer starting on Boxing Day. It’s one of the top hockey tournaments in the world, featuring 10 under-20 national teams facing off for supremacy (and medals).
Over at Daily Faceoff, our pal Steven Ellis has been releasing roster projections for the upcoming tournament. On Thursday, he published his United States roster projection, and a pair of Calgary Flames prospects were on the roster: forwards Ethan Wyttenbach and Cullen Potter.
Wyttenbach was the Flames’ fifth-round pick, 144th overall, in the 2025 NHL Draft. Selected after a pretty strong first season in the United States Hockey League, which capped off with him winning the inaugural Gaudreau Award, he moved to college hockey in 2025-26 and did well. How well? He lead the NCAA in scoring. He was invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase for the United States and impressed, and he’s among the NCAA’s leading scorers again this season.
Potter was the Flames’ first-round pick, 32nd overall, in the 2025 NHL Draft. The son of women’s hockey legend Jenny Potter, Cullen went to the NCAA as a 17-year-old and spent two seasons with Arizona State University before transferring to Michigan State University for this season. He was invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase, but didn’t participate in any on-ice action as he was working his way back from season-ending shoulder surgery. He’s off to a pretty good start with Michigan State this season, where his head coach, Adam Nightingale, happens to be Team USA’s bench boss for the World Juniors.
(2026 first-round pick Jack Hextall, another Michigan State forward, was noted by Ellis as just missing the cut for his roster.)
Between Ellis’ projected American roster, his projected Canadian roster, and Swedish national junior team shoo-in Theo Stockselius, the Flames could have six representatives at the World Juniors: Wyttenbach, Potter, Stockselius, Carson Carels, Cole Reschny and Chase Harrington.
We’ll see how many end up making the trip north from Calgary when the World Juniors begin on Boxing Day.
