Ahead of their gigantic clash with the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday evening, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move. The club announced on Wednesday morning that they’ve summoned forward Adam Klapka from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.
The 24-year-old Klapka made the Flames out of training camp in October, and has since been sent down to the Wranglers and then called back up five times this season – this will be his sixth stint on the NHL roster. Coincidentally, this season is Klapka’s final year of waiver exemption. The right shot forward is a product of Praha, Czechia, and he’s listed at 6’8″ and 230 pounds.
Originally joining the Flames organization as a free agent signing during the 2022 off-season, Klapka’s adjusted really nicely to North American hockey. He’s firmly established himself as one of the top AHL forwards in the Flames’ system, and when he’s been called up to the NHL, he hasn’t looked out of place. So far this season, he has one goal through 13 NHL games, as well as 14 goals and 26 points through 33 AHL games with the Wranglers.
The move uses up one of the Flames’ four “regular” recalls following the trade deadline. (Teams are limited to four recalls after the deadline, but they’re able to make as many emergency recalls to meet roster minimums as are deemed necessary.) Because these recalls are finite, typically players that are called up on “regular” recalls like Klapka’s tend to stick around for the remainder of the season.
Klapka’s addition takes the Flames’ active roster to 22 players – two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards – and leaves them with three “regular” recalls left. They still have one active roster spot under their 23-man limit, as well as more available cap space than every NHL club other than Columbus – about $18.1 million.
The Flames face the Canucks at the Saddledome on Wednesday night.
