The Calgary Flames have made their first move of trade deadline day… and it’s an expected one. In advance of the 1 p.m. MT trade deadline – which is also the deadline to have players on American Hockey League rosters to keep them eligible to play in that league for the rest of the season – the Flames have assigned forward Adam Klapka to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
Klapka is waiver exempt this season, so he can be moved freely between the NHL and AHL all season. Because of Klapka’s many skills and assets – he’s a 6’8″, 235 pound right shot forward that can bring offence and physicality to a team’s bottom six – he’s been up and down a lot this season.
Here’s a snapshot of Klapka’s 2024-25 movements:
  • Made NHL out of camp, remained on NHL roster from Oct. 8-30 and played six games.
  • Assigned to Wranglers on Oct. 30.
  • Called back up on Nov. 11, remained on NHL roster until Nov. 16 but did not dress for any games.
  • Assigned to Wranglers on Nov. 16.
  • Called back up on Nov. 19, remained on NHL roster until Dec. 2 and played one game.
  • Assigned to Wranglers on Dec. 2.
  • Called back up on Jan. 28, remained on NHL roster until Feb. 9 and played six games.
  • Assigned to Wranglers on Feb. 9.
  • Called back up on Feb. 21, remained on NHL roster until today. He has played once on this call-up.
Overall, Klapka has played NHL games this season and has scored one goal. He’s played 31 AHL games with the Wranglers and has 13 goals and 25 points. Originally signed as an undrafted European free agent during the 2022 off-season, Klapka has definitively shown during his last couple of seasons that he’s good enough to be in the NHL, but he hasn’t quite carved out enough of a niche to cement a full-time NHL spot for himself. Yet.
Time will tell if Klapka will reappear on the Flames roster following the trade deadline.
The Flames are back in action on Saturday at home against Montreal. The Wranglers are back at it on Saturday in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Moose.
