Where the Flames organizational roster stands before the 2026 NHL Draft

The Calgary Flames are going to add some new faces to their organization over the next couple of days.
Heading into the 2026 NHL Draft in Buffalo, the Flames own 10 draft selections in the proceedings. (They used to have more, but they used one of their 2026 picks in the swap with New Jersey for Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov earlier in the week.) In advance of the swirl of picks and newcomers, we thought we’d do our annual dive into the state of the Flames roster.
As of Friday morning, here’s who the Flames currently hold the NHL rights to – whether they’re one of the 36 players under contract for 2026-27, a pending free agent, or are a prospect of some sort.
Goaltenders
[4 under contract]
Name | Age | Contract Details |
Dustin Wolf | 25 | $7.5 million (one-way) |
Devin Cooley | 29 | $1.35 million (one-way) |
Kirill Zarubin | 20 | $1,007,500 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Arsenii Sergeev | 23 | $941,250 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
In the system: Daniil Chechelev (VHL), Yegor Yegorov (NCAA)
Pending free agents: Ivan Prosvetov (UFA), Owen Say (RFA)
On paper, goaltending seems fairly sorted across the organization. The NHL tandem is solid, and we’re expecting Say to get a qualifying offer and be part of a three-goalie rotation between the Wranglers and Rapid City. It’s not unreasonable to expect a goalie to get selected in the draft, either, given it’s been a couple of years since the last one.
Defencemen
[10 under contract]
Name [Shot] | Age | Contract Details |
Kevin Bahl [L] | 25 | $5.35 million (one-way) |
Olli Maatta [L] | 31 | $3.5 million (one-way/modified no-trade) |
Zach Whitecloud [R] | 29 | $2.75 million (one-way) |
Joel Hanley [L] | 35 | $1.75 million (one-way) |
Brayden Pachal [R] | 25 | $1,187,500 (one-way) |
Axel Hurtig [L] | 21 | $990,000 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Zayne Parekh [R] | 20 | $953,750 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Abram Wiebe [L] | 22 | $950,000 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Hunter Brzustewicz [R] | 21 | $950,000 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Yan Kuznetsov [L] | 24 | $812,500 (one-way) |
(Kuznetsov has a cap hit below the NHL’s league minimum $850,000 salary because he signed a multi-year deal.)
In the system: Eric Jamieson (NCAA), Jakob Leander (U20 Nationell), Henry Mews (NCAA), Mace’o Phillips (NCAA)
Pending free agents: Jake Bean (UFA), Nick Cicek (UFA), Artem Grushnikov (RFA), Simon Nemec (RFA), Gavin White (RFA)
The Flames have six signed defencemen on one-way deals, plus Nemec, who will undoubtedly get a one-way deal. But the NHL and AHL groups are likely in flux, given that Parekh and Brzustewicz impressed last season. We don’t think the Flames will prioritize drafting defenders, given their prospect depth, but we expect them to draft a few nonetheless.
Centres
[7 under contract]
Name [Shot] | Age | Contract Details |
Ryan Strome [R] | 32 | $5 million (one-way) |
Morgan Frost [L] | 27 | $4.375 million (one-way/modified no-trade) |
Mikael Backlund [L] | 37 | $3.25 million (one-way/no-move) |
Jonathan Castagna [L] | 21 | $1.075 million (two-way/waiver exempt) |
Theo Stockselius [L] | 18 | $1,015,833 (two-way/waiver exempt) |
Tyson Gross [R] | 23 | $975,000 (two-way/waiver exempt) |
Sam Morton [L] | 26 | $850,000 (two-way) |
In the system: Max Curran (NCAA), Jaden Lipinski (NCAA), Cade Littler (NCAA), Yan Matveiko (MHL), Luke Misa (NCAA), Cullen Potter (NCAA), Cole Reschny (NCAA)
Pending free agents: John Beecher (RFA), Clark Bishop (UFA), Carter King (RFA)
The Flames have three established NHL centres on one-ways… and then some questions. We’re expecting a competitive AHL group as Castagna, Gross and Morton battle for ice time – and potentially NHL time. The Flames have oodles of centres in college, but they’ll likely keep drafting several given the importance of the position.
Wingers
[15 under contract]
Name [Shot] | Age | Contract Details |
Jonathan Huberdeau [L] | 33 | $10.5 million (one-way/no-move) |
Matt Coronato [R] | 23 | $6.5 million (one-way) |
Yegor Sharangovich [L] | 28 | $5.75 million (one-way/modified no-trade) |
Joel Farabee [L] | 26 | $5 million (one-way) |
34 | $4.9 million (one-way/modified no-trade)
24 | $3.775 million (one-way)
Martin Pospisil [L] | 26 | $2.5 million (one-way) |
Maxim Tsyplakov [L] | 27 | $2.25 million (one-way) |
Adam Klapka [R] | 25 | $1.25 million (one-way) |
Matvei Gridin [L] | 20 | $953,750 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Sam Honzek [L] | 21 | $909,166 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Andrew Basha [L] | 20 | $932,500 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Aydar Suniev [L] | 21 | $923,333 (two-way, waiver exempt) |
Rory Kerins [L] | 24 | $850,000 (two-way) |
Dryden Hunt [L] | 30 | $825,000 (two-way) |
(Hunt has a cap hit below the NHL’s league minimum $850,000 salary because he signed a multi-year deal.)
In the system: Trevor Hoskin (NCAA), Aidan Lane (NCAA), Ethan Wyttenbach (NCAA)
Pending free agents: Parker Bell (RFA), Lucas Ciona (RFA), Ryan Lomberg (UFA), Victor Olofsson (UFA), Brennan Othmann (RFA), William Stromgren (RFA)
The Flames have two right-shot wingers under contract. We suspect they’ll keep trying to add those to the organization, via the draft and otherwise. If there’s going to be player movement – in-flows or out-flows – this summer, the wings feel like the position we’ll see that movement.
What do you think of the Flames’ organizational roster right now? What do you think they need more of? Where are the holes and where are the strength areas? Let us know in the comments!
