Youth, and depth, is served in Flames road win in San Jose

After splitting a back-to-back set over the weekend – with a Friday victory over Seattle and a Saturday loss to Colorado – the Calgary Flames continued a pretty hectic stretch of their schedule on Monday evening when they visited the San Jose Sharks.
If you were told that the Flames’ power play would score zero goals, and that the team’s younger emerging stars like Simon Nemec, Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato would combine for zero points, you would probably have expected that the Sharks had won the game.
But instead, with the Sharks’ top players negating the Flames’ top players, the different-makers were the Flames younger depth pieces. The fourth line, comprised of 26-year-old Czech winger Adam Klapka and rookies Jonathan Castagna (21) and William Strömgren (23), scored both Flames goals in a 2-1 road win in San Jose.
Klapka scored a first period goal off a turnover caused by a Castagna forecheck. Midway through the third period, Klapka set up Strömgren for his first-ever NHL goal, which ended up standing as the game-winner.
“You’re always happy for a young guy when they score their first one,” said Flames head coach Ryan Huska post-game, via Flames TV. “And I thought he played well. Overall, I thought that line was arguably our best line tonight. I thought Adam did a great job. I thought George kept his game very simple and he was hard to play against. And Willy fit right in there.”
“I think we just keep it simple,” said Klapka, via Flames TV. “Just play below the goal line and, you know, good things happen when do you the right stuff, right?”
Coming off a loss in Colorado on Saturday where the team never led, and actually trailed by four goals midway through the game, the Flames had a superb first period. They out-shot the Sharks by a 12-6 margin in the opening 20 minutes, and managed to keep Sharks star Macklin Celebrini off the scoresheet entirely.
“I loved the first period,” said Huska. “I wish we had stayed with it a little bit longer, because we did a lot of good things. I think we took a lot of their speed away and I thought our team looked faster in the first period. In those situations, I think you want to keep stepping on the gas and continuing to do what we did there.”
Dustin Wolf made 26 saves for the win, his second in as many starts since an injury to fellow netminder Devin Cooley last week against the Edmonton Oilers.
The Flames now head to the Emerald City, Seattle, to conclude their season series with the Kraken on Wednesday night.
