The Calgary Flames host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday evening.
It’s the 60th game of the Flames season, and 30th home game of their season. While the game probably won’t be of huge consequence to either team – the Flames are well out of the playoff pack, while Dallas’ spot in the post-season is assured – some of the spectators for Tuesday’s game will be more noteworthy than usual.
As reported by Sportsnet’s Eric Francis on Sunday, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly are in town to check on Scotia Place progress and meet with Flames executives regarding Calgary potentially hosting the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
On Monday, Global’s Adam MacVicar reported that Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas will be in attendance for Tuesday’s game and will meet with Bettman regarding Calgary’s World Cup bid.
On Monday at City Hall, Farkas mentioned a $15 million funding commitment to support the World Cup of Hockey bid from the provincial government. (Later in the day, Alberta premier Danielle Smith confirmed the support, though she mentioned she understood “it’s a joint bid” for Calgary and Edmonton.) Support from the Calgary municipal government will come to city council in the near future.
Farkas is asked about World Cup of Hockey bid. Province confirmed $15M pledge for the bid. Farkas says financial participation from the city will come to city council.
A couple weeks back, Daly was on Pierre Maguire’s podcast, Inside the Game, and stated that there will be one North American city and one European city serving as hosts for the World Cup of Hockey preliminary rounds, with the semi-final and final games taking place in North America. (Perhaps plans changed, or perhaps Premier Smith was mistaken when she commented.)
Last held in 2016, the World Cup of Hockey will pit eight national teams against each other for pride and a trophy. Calgary’s bid includes hosting games at Scotia Place, the new home of the Calgary Flames which is slated to open ahead of the 2027-28 NHL season. The World Cup of Hockey would take place in February 2028 during a scheduled break in the NHL schedule.
We’ll have more on Scotia Place’s construction progress and the World Cup bid as those stories develop.
