Game at a glance
After getting Friday night off, Devin Cooley was back between the pipes for Calgary on Sunday afternoon. On the other end of the ice, Kaapo Kahkonen was back in the crease for his second straight start. The Wranglers had more jump than their opponents going into this game and did get some solid opportunities in the offensive zone in the first half of the period. Including, some good looks from Matt Coronato, who joined the team for his first game in the AHL this season.
Calgary was the first team to go on the power play when Jayson Megna was called for holding at 4:21. The Wranglers registered a shot on this man advantage but did not open up the scoring. Shortly after, Hunter Brzustewicz was called for tripping and in the dying seconds of the power play, the Eagles scored the opening goal.
Captain, Jason Megna scored on a rebound and made it a 1-0 game. Former Wrangler, Matthew Phillips picked up the primary assist and Calle Rosen picked up the secondary. It was all Wranglers after this goal with even a breakaway opportunity for Walker Duehr at 14:33 that Kahkonen denied. At the end of the first, the Wranglers trailed 1-0 and were behind 10-9 in shots.
In the second period, the Wranglers were looking for their signature early period goal but weren’t able to find it. Instead, the special teams was the theme of the period. First David Silye was called for high sticking at 3:11 then at 4:54 Jayson Megna of the Eagles was called for tripping and Matt Coronato was called for embellishment when Megna’s stick got caught between his feet.
These penalties expired without any score changes and the majority of the remaining parts of the period were played out pretty smoothly. It wasn’t until 18:30 when the Wranglers got a goal back and finally got their equalizer. Jakob Pelletier forced a turnover for Colorado and Rory Kerins fed the puck up to Martin Frk, who beat Kahkonen.
Frk has not had lack of chances to score but finally got the monkey off his back in his first game on the top line. Head Coach, Trent Cull commented on this goal after the game and said,
“It was just a matter of time for sure. I’m happy to see him get that. Sometimes guys who do those things, it’s tough when you’re not scoring and when you get the one, hopefully now it will just open up the dam with many more to see.”
That pretty well wrapped up the second period and the Wranglers went into the second intermission with a 1-1 even score. Shots in this frame were 10-6 for Calgary. In the third, it still felt like Calgary was making the better effort to take their first lead of the day.
Their best chance was on a shot in the first few minutes of the frame that snuck past Kahkonen and slowly made its way to the goal line. However, an Eagle player got to it before any of the Wranglers skaters could poke it in. The desperation for another goal didn’t seem to set in until the last five minutes of the period or so. Jakob Pelletier had a good look that rang off the post and Dryden Hunt got to a rebound and buried it but the play had been blown down by that point so the marker would not count.
In the last 90 seconds, the Wranglers would get a goal that counted when Jarred Tinordi forced a turnover then Walker Duehr battled to get the puck up to Clark Bishop who sniped the go-ahead goal for the home team.
The Eagles pulled their netminder shortly after but did not register another shot on goal for the rest of the game. The Wranglers added another game to their winning streak with a 2-1 win in regulation. Shots finished 29-26 for Calgary with Devin Cooley stopping 25 out of 26 from the Eagles. The three stars were all Wranglers with Rory Kerins earning the third star, Martin Frk earning the second and Clark Bishop earning the first.
Bishop had some words about the success of the team so far after the game saying,
“I think just every guy in the room just no quit in the team. Everyone has the same mindset and we’re just kinda rolling with it.”
