The Calgary Wranglers were back in action on Saturday for the back end of a back to back against the Colorado Avalanche affiliate, the Eagles. They were the ones to come out on top in game one and looked to get the sweep in game two. Colorado took an early lead on their first shot then netted another three before the Wranglers could get on the board. Tyson Gross and Dryden Hunt scored within two minutes of each other to put them within two then Rory Kerins put them within one before the end of the period. The Eagles pulled ahead in the third and the Wranglers couldn’t get back in time to force overtime. The final score was 6-4 for Colorado.
Lineup notes
With Kevin Bahl being a last minute scratch for the Flames in Friday’s game due to injury, there was a chance that the Wranglers would be down a defenceman if the big club needed a blueliner. That was the case with Brayden Pachal missing from this game. No transaction is confirmed yet. Kyle Walker came into the lineup to fill the gap. In net, Owen Say picked up the win in Friday’s game but it would go back to Arsenii Sergeev with the start and Kirill Zarubin as back-up for this game.

Game at a glance
Arsenii Sergeev got his first start since returning from his NHL call-up and he was matched up against Trent Miner for the Eagles. On the first shift and the first shot of the game, Adam Beckman scored the game’s opening goal just 22 seconds in. This goal understandably put the Wranglers on their heels and Sam Morton was the first Calgary skater to get a chance on goal with a backhand shot at the end of a spin. There was a bit of contact with Miner and a crowd gathered in front of the net.
At 5:20, the Eagles almost had another when Beckman went in with a wraparound attempt that he thought he might’ve snuck in. The officials took some time to review it and determined it was no goal. At 8:18, the first penalty of the game was called against Alex Gallant for holding. The Wranglers killed it off but shortly after, the Eagles came into the zone on a three on one and Alex Gagne scored on a bar down shot. This goal was scored at 11:10.
Less than a minute later at 12:04, Adam Beckman scored his second of the game and that was it for Sergeev’s night. Kirill Zarubin came into net and the Wranglers called a timeout. Sergeev ended up giving up three goals on 11 shots. At the point of the goaltending change, the Wranglers only had three shots on goal but this climbed in the back half of the period. At 17:02, Axel Hurtig wanted to get his team going and fought Cooper Gay.
At 18:43, the Wranglers took another penalty when Hunter Brzustewicz was tagged for slashing. Calgary needed to penalty kill for the rest of the period an this carried over into the second. At the end of 20 minutes, the Wranglers were down 3-0 and being outshot 15-11.
The Wranglers still had 43 seconds to kill off in Brzustewicz’s penalty but 17 seconds into the second period, the Eagles scored off a redirected one timer attempt from Gavin Bridnley. At 3:52, Mike Benning and Taylor Makar ran into each other around Zarubin’s crease and were called for offsetting minors. Benning was called for slashing and Makar was called for goaltending interference.
This four on four came and went and at 6:31, Zarubin went off for the delayed penalty call and the Wranglers managed some pressure in the offensive zone that finished with a puck poked into the back of the net. Tyson Gross was the goalscorer with Sam Morton and Dryden Hunt picking up the assists at 7:05.

At 8:50, the Wranglers added another when Dryden Hunt had time and space in the slot to set up a top shelf shot. Alex Nylander and Ben Jones picked up the assists on Calgary’s second of the night.

At the 12 minute mark, Mike Benning was sent to the box again. This time for delay of game. Calgary managed to kill this penalty off without giving up any shots. At 16:12, Rory Kerins forced his way onto the doorstep and got a shot past Miner to get the Wranglers within a single goal. Andrew Basha and Axel Hurtig picked up the assists on Kerins’ tally.
When Rory Kerins celebrates like this, you know it's a big one. Wranglers are right back in this game.
Calgary pressured the Eagles until the final second of the frame and at the end of 40 minutes, the Wranglers were down by just one at 4-3 and were up to 26-22 in shots. It would be the Eagles who got on the board next with a rebound goal 2:33 into the third off the stick of Nikita Prishchepov.
Around the eight minute mark, Nikita Pavlychev took a puck to the face on a clearing attempt from the Eagles and left the ice to be treated. He did not appear to return to this game. At 12:26, the Wranglers got a power play chance when Alex Gagne was called for hooking. At 13:19, Ben Jones took the shot and Tyson Gross got the last touch on it to beat Miner to put Calgary back within one. This goal was originally credited to Ben Jones then changed to Gross. Luke Philp and Jones picked up the assists. This was a milestone point for Philp for his 100th AHL assist.
WHATTA BEAUTY 💥
At 16:50, the Wranglers had another power play chance and ended up pulling Zarubin at 17:29 for a six-on-four. They had a few looks but the Eagles would end up putting a puck in the empty net with 16 seconds to go. This game ended in a 6-4 Colorado win and shots finished 37-30 for Calgary.
