The Calgary Wranglers announced a few more additions to their roster on July 2. Three more players were signed to the team on AHL deals. This included two Flames AHL affiliated returns, one from last season and one from the Stockton Heat days. Carter Wilkie and Luke Philp are the returnees and the newcomer is Ryder Boulton from the OHL’s Brantford Bulldogs. All three are forwards and are needed on a lean looking roster at this point in the off-season.
Carter Wilkie
Wilkie is one of the multiple Calgary-born players on the Wranglers roster and played his full first pro season between the Rapid City Rush and Calgary Wranglers last season. He is a right shot centre that also played quite a bit of time on the wing in the AHL. He signed a contract extension for another year and due to his regularity in the lineup towards the end of the year, he will likely spend most of the year in Calgary as opposed to Rapid City. The 26 year old had three points in 27 games with the Wranglers last season and 13 points in 14 games with the Rush.
Luke Philp
Philp just missed the official relocation to Calgary when the Stockton Heat made the move but did play with the Heat when they had the shortened bubble season over the Covid-19 pandemic. Luke Philp is a local player as well, coming from Canmore, AB and played USports with the University of Alberta, where he served as the alternate captain his final year in 2017-18. He played three seasons with the Heat and had 31 points in 52 games his rookie year, 17 points in 30 games his sophomore season and 44 points in 66 games his final year with the Heat.
Philp is a right shot centre/winger who happened to make his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2022-23 season and spent the next two years with their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, then the Hershey Bears in 2024–25. Philp spent last year in the SHL with Farjestad BK and had 35 points in 52 games.
This 30 year old forward comes in with experience and leadership traits that will work well with this team. Philp has played a total of 281 AHL games to date and has 89 goals and 92 assists in that time. He also played with Martin Pospisil, Alex Gallant, Connor Zary, Rory Kerins, Dustin Wolf and Yan Kuznetsov in his time with the Heat.
Ryder Boulton
Boulton is the youngest of the group as a 20 year old left shot winger coming from Atlanta, GA. He played two seasons with the OHL’s London Knights then the Brantford Bulldogs last season. He hasn’t been a high scoring player but has been trending slightly up. He had five points in 45 games in 2023-24, six points in 43 games in 2024-25 and eight points in 48 games this past season. Boulton has won two championships with the London Knights and may start his pro career in the ECHL this Fall. He’ll likely make his way up to the Wranglers at some point in the year and serve a depth role.
These contracts came in addition to the two AHL contracts dealt to Alex Gallant and Kent Anderson in mid-May. Other business has been getting taken care of in the last 24-48 hours with William Stromgren signing his two-way contract extension and Ben Jones returning to the Wranglers on a two-way contract. The roster is by no means filled up just yet but the pieces are starting to come together.
