Another home-town player is ready to be drafted in a couple weeks. 2026 NHL Draft prospect Cooper Williams is a Calgary native, who played a majority of his youth hockey career in Calgary. This left-handed forward has been a standout player throughout his entire career, known for his incredible hockey IQ, high-pressure play capabilities and unmatched shot accuracy.
Williams is commonly projected to be an early to mid second round draft pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He showcased his skills at the 2026 Draft Combine last weekend in Buffalo, New York. Some of his most impressive highlights include a tie for 6th in the anaerobic fitness test with a 42.3% fatigue index, as well as a tie for 21st in the force plate (no arm jump) test with a 18.2 inch vertical.
How did Cooper Williams fare in the WHL?
Williams was drafted to the Saskatoon Blades, 41st overall in the 2023 WHL Draft, before jumping into back-to-back standout seasons with the team.
In his 2024-25 season, he obtained 21 goals, 36 assists and 57 points in 68 games. He had a similar point run in his 2025-26 season, with 23 goals, 34 assists and 57 points in 66 games. During this season, Williams also racked up six playoff points in 11 games. To add to this already impressive season, he played for U18 Team Canada in the 2025-26 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where the team won bronze.
In May 2025, Williams committed to the University of North Dakota and is expected to join the program for the 2027–28 season.
What do the scouts think of Cooper Williams?
James Connelly wrote a detailed breakdown of Williams’ game over at Recruit Scouting.
Here are a couple excerpts:
SkatingWilliams, when he gets up to speed, is quite a solid skater. He can beat opponents one-on-one with his speed and puck protection. He does take a few strides to get up to speed, but is capable as an attacker on the rush. One thing that Williams could improve upon in his skating is his explosiveness. The top-end speed is there, but to get there takes him a stride or two too much. He is fine on his edges, too. The pivoting does take some time, but that draws back to the explosiveness. Overall, Williams’ skating is one of the weaker aspects of his game at the moment, but as long as he works with a skating coach, Williams could turn this current weakness into a strength.PassingThe strongest aspect of Williams’ game is his passing. He can hit open teammates with needle-threading passes, and he can open up passing lanes with deception. Williams also constantly makes the correct play when passing, which is quite encouraging, as many WHL rookies cannot make the plays Williams makes. Williams tends to lean towards passing first, but this is not a bad thing, as many pass-first players wind up becoming high-end two-way threats at the next level…
What could he bring to the Calgary Flames?
First and foremost, Williams’ impressive ability to play incredibly well in high pressure situations is something that the Flames have been coveting for a while now. With a team full of rookies, someone who can keep a cool head during elite play will be essential for the team to excel. This ability also allows him to elevate his play when his teammates need him the most, making him a strong asset to any team.
On top of that, Williams is also a great goal scorer, with notable shot accuracy, being able to get a shot off from almost anywhere. This alongside his puck handling and exceptional hockey IQ, would make him a well rounded, young athlete that the Flames should pick up. To sweeten the deal, Williams is also a Calgary local, which can help forge a deeper connection to the fans – and when the fans have fun, the team has fun!
