Could the Maple Leafs be a destination for Flames blueliner Rasmus Andersson?

There are two things we think we know 19 games into the 2025-26 season. First, it hasn’t been the best season for the Calgary Flames. Second, it seems pretty likely that Rasmus Andersson will be departing the Flames prior to the Mar. 6 trade deadline.
A right shot defenceman with over 550 NHL games under his belt, Andersson is a pending unrestricted free agent that probably just isn’t quite a fit for where the Flames are right now. So we’re presuming he’s dealt over the next few months.
On Thursday, over on Leafs Morning Take, Jay Rosehill discussed some chatter he’s hearing about a possible destination for Andersson: the Toronto Maple Leafs, home of Brad Treliving – the general manager that drafted Andersson in 2015 back when he was with the Flames.
“I got a guy within the league who says the Toronto Maple Leafs are actively trying hard to get Rasmus Andersson out of Calgary,” said Rosehill.
After a bit of a back and forth between Rosehill and co-host Nick Alberga, Alberga summarized some of the challenges facing the Flames and the Maple Leafs so far this season.
“We all know [the Flames are] going to go after Gavin McKenna. I mean, that makes no sense why you try to stick around at this point, even from the Andersson standpoint, A, like the only way [the Leafs are] making that deal is to re-sign Rasmus Andersson. B, do you even have the assets to play ball for Rasmus Andersson? Right? Like we all know the teams are going to be involved, whether it’s Dallas or Vegas, or everybody should be lining up for Rasmus Andersson, a right-handed shooting defenseman. I just don’t know if the Maple Leafs have the assets to make a deal like that. On top of that, he’s on the team, Brad Treliving’s former team. We’ve had that combo a billion times. We talked about Zadorov a couple of years ago, Chris Tanev. I think you’re paying a premium on top of that because it’s Calgary.”
For those just joining us, Treliving served as Flames GM from 2014 through 2023, at which point he left the Flames upon the expiry of his contract and joined the Maple Leafs as their new GM. He was succeeded by Craig Conroy, amidst some minor chatter of hard feelings about Treliving’s exit, whether he could interview for other jobs, whether or not he could be sitting at Toronto’s 2023 draft table, and rumours regarding a “Treliving tax” putting a higher price on trades with the Leafs.
Later on Thursday, TSN’s Darren Dreger joined Barn Burner and discussed Rosehill’s report and added a tidbit about the Flames’ 2025 trade deadline.
“You guys know how Brad Treliving operates and, you know, he makes hundreds of calls a year and that’s probably underestimating the reality of what he does. I can tell you with certainty that he thought they were close on a Rasmus Anderson trade at the trade deadline last year. And maybe it was Calgary, Craig Conroy, that decided, okay, we’re going to back away for a different, you know, whatever. I mean, they still held out hope that there was a deal that they could extend him with. They were looking at other opportunities. Didn’t love the idea of sending him to Toronto and watching him every Saturday night, blah, blah, blah, that sort of stuff. I don’t know. But I do know that they spent a lot of time on trying to acquire Anderson at that point.”
Dreger reiterated what Alberga discussed about what Toronto would be able to offer the Flames.
“If you couldn’t acquire Rasmus Anderson at the trade deadline, how are you getting him now? Less than 20 games into the season or, you know, at any point in the near future? Because you don’t have to be a Toronto Maple Leafs guru to look at what they don’t have. They don’t have really anything coming.”
We don’t have a precise idea of what the Flames’ preferred price tag would be for Andersson, but it seems likely it would include some combination of a high draft pick, a young roster player and/or a good prospect. We shall see if the Leafs, or anyone else, can meet that price.
