For the second consecutive season, a Calgary Flames prospect has been named the top goaltender in the Western Hockey League. Everett Silvertips netminder Dustin Wolf received the honour for the second season in a row, edging out fellow finalists Sebastian Cossa (Edmonton), Trent Miner (Vancouver) and Nolan Maier (Saskatoon).
Wolf, 20, had a monster season in the WHL for the third consecutive season. He was among the league leaders in basically every goaltending statistical category – goals against average (1.80, second behind Cossa), save percentage (.940, second behind Cossa), wins (18, first) and shutouts (4, tied with Cossa and Miner). He also made his pro debut with Stockton before the WHL season got going and captured a gold medal as Team USA’s backup at the World Juniors.
Wolf’s junior career is now over and he’s amassed a monstrous resume from his time as an amateur:
  • Two-time conference all-star and one-time divisional all-star
  • Two-time WHL goaltender of the year
  • One-time CHL goaltender of the year
  • One-time WHL scholastic player of the year
  • One-time CHL scholastic player of the year
  • One-time USA Hockey junior goaltender of the year
  • World Junior gold medalist
  • Second all-time in WHL history in shutouts (24)
Junior success is no guarantee of further success, but it’s a nice way to head into the pro ranks with some momentum.
