Friends, the ongoing development of Scotia Place, the future home of the Calgary Flames, has been one of the top stories here at FlamesNation over the past decade.
We’ve heard from players, fans and dignitaries alike, all telling us how excited they are for the building’s eventual opening. In the works in various forms since 2013, and under active construction since July 2024, the arena will replace the beloved Scotiabank Saddledome as the home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames, AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks, and as the city’s primary major concert venue. It’s also slated to host the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.
However, we can exclusively report that the opening of Scotia Place, expected to be taking place in September 2027, will be delayed for an undetermined period because the entire building needs to be moved three feet to the left.
Sources close to the project have told FlamesNation that they were laser-focused on not making any construction or design miscues that would create public mockery – such as those experienced by the PalaItalia Santa Giulia, one of the host arenas for hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, which drew criticism for being three feet shorter than regulation National Hockey League ice specifications.
However, in all their preparations to ensure the rink was the correct size, the building was inadvertently shifted three feet to the right. As a result, the entire arena structure has to be disassembled, moved three feet to the left, and then reassembled again.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, City Hall sources explained the implications of having to move the entire arena structure three feet to the left:
When Scotia Place opens, we want to ensure that everyone entering that venue has an unparalleled experience in the new facility. We need to be sure that the Saddledome is replaced by a building that’s in the correct location. And we would be utter fools if we allowed it to be built inadvertently three feet to the right. Complete fools.
Fools, indeed.
The hope is that Scotia Place can somehow open, as originally scheduled, in time for the 2027-28 season. (When it does, if anything seems slightly off relative to the originally published schematics, try not to get too hung up on it.)
Happy April, everybody.
