On Thursday night, the Calgary Flames hosted the St. Louis Blues. It was a closely-contested game that required overtime to decide a winner.
The overtime goal that decided the game, scored by Blues defenceman Colton Parayko, was the subject of a lot of controversy.
After Flames netminder Dan Vladar made the initial save on a shot from Blues forward Robert Thomas, Parayko and Flames forward Yegor Sharangovich scrambled for the loose puck in the crease. In the hubbub, the puck ended in the net and St. Louis were – after a six minute review of the initial call on the ice – were declared the winners.
We took it to social media to ask our followers: Should this goal have counted?
“Stick bends as it hits the pad. Vladar locked to the post on initial shot. Seems like a very easy, classic call of goaltender interference. Didn’t watch the game but super suprised this was called a goal. Will someone from the Flames go bizerk to the media?” – @steeves11
“I’m a Canucks fan and I was stunned it was called a goal. Seemed pretty cut and dry.” – @jabo_vancouver
“That puck doesn’t go unless the pad is pushed in. Clearly the @NHL employs middle school graduates.” – @RiderFanClaire
“Am I blind or did the stick not flex as it pushed the pad in at the crease of the boot/shinpad?” – @hockeybarn_
“The only people who would say yes would have to be Blues or Oilers fans.” – @WhovianJames
“Unless I’m living in another universe, that puck doesn’t go in without him pushing Vladar’s pad aside
So NO” – @RebelliousW0LF
“No. Goal tender interference. You can’t push the pad out of the way to allow the puck to go into the net.” – @gbabin1010
“That’s one of the most obvious goalie interference I’ve ever seen. Can’t push the pad like that. Wow” – @flemwad29
“Literally doesn’t stop pushing the pad until the puck crosses the line, the entirety of its movement there is due to being pushed.” – @scruffy_lookin
“Not a Flames fan, but clearly that should be no goal” – @jribeyre96
As you would expect, the vast majority of FlamesNation‘s social media respondents thought the goal should be overturned. There were only a rare few that made a case for the goal standing.
“Hits the puck first and then the Flames player pushes the stick into the pad. Good goal.” – @mikeinthevalley
The Flames are back at it on Sunday when they visit the Dallas Stars.
