Less than a minute into Saturday night’s contest between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames, Flames goaltender Karri Ramo sustained an apparent lower-body injury while making a routine save and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Jonas Hiller.

Though Hiller has started a run of games over the past week, Ramo and Hiller have essentially split time pretty equally since February, with Ramo narrowly outperforming the Swiss-born Hiller by save percentage.

If Ramo’s injury is serious that could be a big loss for a Flames team that is lacking in goaltending depth, particularly with usual third-stringer netminder Joni Ortio not having seen any action since February. Presumably the Flames’ third string goaltender might be Brad Thiessen, who has managed a rather pedestrian .905 save percentage in 33 games with the Flames’ American Hockey League affiliate in Adirondack.

Fortunately for the Flames, who are locked in a tooth and nail fight for a Western Conference playoff berth, they don’t have any back-to-backs on the docket in the final week of the season.
