The draft lottery hits keep on coming for the Calgary Flames.
At the 2026 edition of the draft lottery, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the draw for first overall and the San Jose Sharks won the draw for the second overall selection. With both of those teams being behind the Flames in the draft order prior to the lottery, the Flames moved back two slots – from fourth overall – and will draft sixth overall in the 2026 NHL Draft.
It’ll be the sixth time that the Flames have selected sixth overall in the NHL Draft.
  • In 1992, they selected forward Cory Stillman.
  • In 1997, they selected forward Daniel Tkaczuk.
  • In 1998, they selected forward Rico Fata.
  • In 2013, they selected forward Sean Monahan.
  • In 2016, they selected forward Matthew Tkachuk.
The Flames have still never won a draft lottery. And they moved back for the second time in their lottery history, coincidentally the other time that happened was in 2016, when they moved back from fifth to sixth and selected Tkachuk.
Toronto’s four number winning combination was 7-2-11-12, with the Flames remaining alive with a 9.1% chance on the final drawing. (If the last ball was 10 instead of 12, they would’ve won first overall). San Jose’s winning four number combination for second overall was 11-4-3-7. The Leafs had an 8.5% chance of winning the first draw and moving up from fifth overall. The Sharks had a 5.5% chance of winning the second draw and moving up from ninth overall.
The Flames own two first round selections this year: their own and Vegas’, which came to them through the Noah Hanifin trade prior to the 2024 trade deadline. Since becoming general manager in 2023, Craig Conroy has made five first-round picks: Sam Honzek (16th overall in 2023), Zayne Parekh (9th overall in 2024), Matvei Gridin (28th overall in 2024), Cole Reschny (18th overall in 2025) and Cullen Potter (32nd overall in 2025).
The top six players in Daily Faceoff draft expert Steven Ellis’ April rankings are Gavin McKenna (1), Ivar Stenberg (2), Chase Reid (3), Keaton Verhoeff (4), Carson Carels (5) and Caleb Malhotra (6).
The 2026 NHL Draft takes place June 26 and 27 in Buffalo, New York.
