The NCAA began its Division I men’s hockey season way, way back in October with 63 teams vying for glory. After Saturday afternoon, one will reign supreme as its national champion.
Calgary Flames prospect Eric Jamieson and his team, the University of Denver Pioneers, face off against the University of Wisconsin Badgers, with the broadcast kicking off at 3:30 p.m. MT on TSN2 and TSN+.

Denver

The Pioneers won their conference’s playoff tournament to earn their way into the national tournament, then they beat Cornell, Western Michigan and Michigan to earn their way to the final. They haven’t lost a game since Jan. 23.
Here’s how they lined up on Thursday:
Rieger Lorenz (MIN) – Samu Salminen (NJD) – James Reeder (LAK)
Sam Harris (MTL) – Clarke Caswell (SEA) – Kristian Epperson (LAK)
Kyle Chyzowski – Kieran Cebrian – Brendan McMorrow (LAK)
Reid Varkonyi – Jake Fisher (COL) – Hagen Burrows (TBL)
Brady Milburn
Eric Jamieson (CGY) – Eric Pohlkamp (SJS)
Boston Buckberger – Kent Anderson
Cale Ashcroft – Garrett Brown (WPG)
Johnny Hicks
Quentin Miller (MTL)
Paxton Geisel
The key to the Pioneers’ success is netminder Johnny Hicks, who’s 16-0-1 this season with a 1.20 goals against average and .957 save percentage. He’s kept Denver in a lot of games, including Thursday’s overtime win, which saw him make 49 saves.
Jamieson’s been a really effective freshman for Denver this season, and he’s paired with Hobey Baker finalist Pohlkamp, another Eric, on their top pairing. The Pioneers arguably don’t have any massive offensive weapons, but they boast really effective players up and down their lineup, and so they’re a team that can find different ways to win because they can adapt to different styles of games.

Wisconsin

The Badgers lost to Ohio State in the quarterfinal round of the Big 10 conference tournament, but were invited to the national tournament as an at-large team. They earned their way to the national title game with wins over Dartmouth, Michigan State and North Dakota.
Here’s how they lined up on Thursday:
Christian Fitzgerald – Gavin Morrissey – Quinn Finley (NYI)
Ryan Botterill – Oliver Tulk – Simon Tassy
Blake Montgomery (OTT) – Vasily Zelenov (BUF) – Jack Horbach
Finn Brink – Grady Deering – Adam Pietila
Kyle Kukkonen (ANA)
Joe Palodichuk – Ben Dexheimer
Luke Osburn (BUF) – Aiden Dubinsky
Weston Knox – Jack Phelan (DET)
Daniel Hauser
Eli Pulver
Anton Castro
Wisconsin is arguably less of a wagon on paper than Denver. But that was the case against North Dakota on Thursday, too, and they managed to dominate the first half of the game with a really dogged forecheck. Their penalty kill did a great job in the back half of the game, and former Calgary Hitmen netminder Daniel Hauser was consistently great throughout the game.
Perhaps because they lack top college stars, Wisconsin is a team with a capital-T: they play a connected, structured, high-pace game, and they wear opponents down and force mistakes. North Dakota made enough mistakes with the puck that Wisconsin scored two quick goals and managed their lead for the rest of the game.
Can they pull it off again?
It’s worth noting that if Denver wins, Jamieson will be the first Flames prospect to win an NCAA championship since Providence College won back in 2015, back when Jon Gillies, John Gilmour and Mark Jankowski were with the Friars. We’ll see if Jamieson and the Pioneers can snap that lengthy cold streak.
