For the first time in its history, Merrimack College has won the Hockey East Title.
On Saturday evening, Trevor Hoskin and the Merrimack Warriors defeated UConn by a score of 2-1 to clinch their first ever Hockey East title. Hoskin, the Calgary Flames’ fourth-rounder in 2024, picked up an assist on the opening goal, giving him three goals and an assist in the Hockey East tournament.
But the story of Saturday’s game was netminder Max Lundgren. The Swedish netminder faced relentless pressure, especially in the third period, as UConn was hunting the game-tying goal. It never came because the sophomore stopped 49 of 50 shots for a .980 save percentage. You won’t see that very often.
Hoskin has been one of Merrimack’s most important players this season, as the 21-year-old scored 13 goals and 35 points in 33 games. His biggest contribution has to be his overtime goal against Providence in the quarterfinals, though he did score two goals in Merrimack’s 5-3 victory over UMass Lowell. This is Hoskin’s sophomore season, having spent the 2024-25 season with Niagara University, scoring 12 goals and 39 points in 36 games.
As for Merrimack themselves, this was a must-win game to keep their season alive. The only way they could get into the National Tournament was with a tournament win, and they did just that. Since joining Hockey East for the 1989-90 season, they’ve been to two Hockey East championships, falling 5-3 to Boston College in 2010-11, then losing a heart breaker to Boston University in 2022-23, falling in overtime.
In those two seasons, Merrimack earned a berth to the National Championship. In 2023, they fell 5-0 to Quinnipiac in the regional semifinal, and lost another heart-breaker in 2011, falling 4-3 in overtime to Notre Dame, also in the regional semifinal. The other time Merrimack made the Natty was in 1988, beating Northeastern over a two game series, but eventually losing to Lake Superior State in the quarterfinals.
Merrimack has been playing terrific hockey over the past three weeks, with their last loss coming on Feb. 21. Since then, they’ve gone, 7-0, with four of those wins coming in the Hockey East tournament.
The bracket for the National Tournament has yet to be determined, but Merrimack will be playing at some point next season. Hoskin won’t be the other Flame prospect heading to the Natty, as Eric Jamieson, Ethan Wyttenbach, the three prospects at North Dakota, and two others will also receive at-large bids.
