One of the Calgary Flames’ 2024 draft selections has been named the top rookie in his conference. On Tuesday, the Atlantic Hockey America conference named Niagara University freshman Trevor Hoskin their rookie of the year.
An Ontario product, the 20-year-old Hoskin is a right shot forward who can play centre or the wing, but has primarily lined up on the wing in college. He was selected by the Flames in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
Here’s what the conference’s media release said about Hoskin’s award:
Niagara forward Trevor Hoskin is the AHA Rookie of the Year. Hoskin was among the nation’s top-scoring freshmen in 2024-25, and his 39 points on the season are currently tied for the national lead among rookies. In AHA play during the regular season, Hoskin led all rookies and ranked seventh among all skaters in the league with 29 points. In addition, his 20 assists in league play led all rookies and ranked fourth among all skaters. The Belleville, Ont. native orchestrated two seven-game point streaks on the season, with the first ranging from Oct. 12 – Nov. 1, and the second lasting from Jan. 4 – Jan. 25. He was named AHA Rookie of the Week on Jan. 27, and was named AHA Rookie of the Month for September/October and January. Hoskin is the second Purple Eagle to earn AHA Rookie of the Year honors, following Ludwig Stenlund in 2018-19.
Previous to this award, Hoskin was named to his conference’s second all-star team and all-rookie team. Prior to joining Niagara University, he spent three seasons with the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Cobourg Cougars. In his final season with the Cougars, he was that league’s leading scorer and most valuable player, and was named the top forward in Canadian junior-A hockey.
In short: Hoskin has had two really strong seasons, and he was one of the top freshmen in college hockey this season. We’ll see how he builds upon these results next season.
