In a season where Calgary Flames prospects have continually done cool things and won awards, one of their prospects has done cool things and won another award. On Monday morning, the American Hockey League announced that Calgary Wranglers forward William Stromgren has been named their Player of the Week.
Over the seven day period ending Feb. 22. Stromgren played three games. The Wranglers won all three!
- He had zero points and was even in the Wranglers’ 3-2 shootout win in Manitoba on Feb. 16. (He was the first of their three shooters but didn’t score.)
- He had a goal and two assists and was plus-2 in the Wranglers’ 5-4 overtime win in Bakersfield on Saturday.
- He had two goals and an assist and was plus-4 in the Wranglers’ 4-3 overtime win in San Jose on Sunday.
All-in-all, he had three goals, three assists and was plus-6 over three games.
A second-round selection by the Flames in the 2021 NHL Draft, Stromgren is a product of Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. He signed his entry-level contract and moved to North America for the 2023-24 season. He’s currently in his third season with the Wranglers; he posted 27 points in 2023-24 and 49 points in 2024-25. So far in 2025-26, he has 37 points through 45 games. He made his NHL debut earlier this season, appearing in three games, primarily on the fourth line, during a call-up back in January.
A left shot winger, Stromgren has emerged as one of the most impressive prospects in the Flames’ system – FlamesNation had him 16th in our prospect rankings back in August. It’s yet to be seen if he can be a difference-maker at the NHL level, but he’s carved out a regular top six role for himself with the Wranglers and has been finding ways to be noticeable even if games where he’s not scoring. He’s currently tied for 44th in the AHL in points.
The Wranglers are back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday when they host the San Jose Barracuda.
