Calgary Flames prospect Zayne Parekh made history on Thursday night, scoring a power-play goal to become the first OHL defenceman to reach the 100-point mark in a single season in more than a decade.
With his Saginaw Spirit trailing the Barrie Colts by a 2-0 score late in the first period, Parekh collected the puck at the point and walked all the way into the slot before firing a quick shot past goaltender Sam Hillebrandt for his 100th point of the 2024-25 regular season.
Parekh, 19, now has 32 goals and 68 assists in 57 games with the Spirit this year. He’s only the second defenceman to reach the 100-point mark in a single season during the 21st century, joining Ryan Ellis, who recorded 24 goals and 100 points in 58 games with the Windsor Spitfires in 2010-11.
The Flames originally selected Parekh with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The 6’0″, 185-pound righty won the Memorial Cup with Saginaw in 2024 and was also named the CHL’s defenceman of the year.

Parekh became the fifth OHL player to reach the 100-point mark this season and currently leads all of the league’s defencemen in scoring this season by a wide margin. London Knights rearguard Sam Dickinson (SJ) sits in second place with 78 points in 48 games; Sudbury Wolves defender Henry Mews, another Flames prospect, is in third with 76 points in 60 games.
The Spirit won Thursday’s game by a 7-4 final score, with Parekh recording just one point (the goal) to reach 100 on the year. Kristian Epperson and Kaeden Johnson both scored twice for Saginaw, while Igor Chernyshov (SJ) and Nic Sima both added one goal each in the win.
Led by the offensive trio of Chernyshov, Parekh, and Michael Misa, Saginaw currently ranks fourth in the OHL’s Western Conference with a 35-23-3 record through 61 games. The Spirit are the OHL’s best offensive team by far, having already scored 297 goals — 17 more than the second-place London Knights.
With six games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season, Parekh and the Spirit will return to action on Saturday to play host to the Brantford Bulldogs at Dow Event Center in Saginaw, MI at 7:05 p.m. ET.
