The Calgary Wranglers announced Friday that forward Connor Zary has undergone knee surgery and will remain out on a week-to-week basis.
Zary, 25, has one goal and four points in six games with the Wranglers this season, but has missed the past two games with what the club previously termed a lower-body injury. The Wranglers have now confirmed that Zary underwent a successful procedure on his knee on Thursday and will continue to miss time as he recovers.
The Calgary Flames demoted Zary to the Wranglers earlier this month after he cleared waivers on Oct. 6. The Saskatoon product collected one assist in two games with the Flames before being waived but drew the ire of head coach Ryan Huska for his inconsistency and frequent turnovers.
The NHL’s other 31 clubs each opted against claiming Zary for free off the waiver wire, although it likely had less to do with his on-ice abilities than his unwieldy contract, which carries a $3.775 million cap hit through 2028.
The Flames originally selected Zary in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, trading down twice from their original spot at No. 19 to land the Kamloops Blazers standout. Zary quickly emerged as a top player with the AHL’s Stockton Heat and the Wranglers before joining the Flames in the 2023-24 season.
Zary collected 14 goals and 34 points in 63 games with the Flames as a rookie in 2023-24, but he never managed to replicate that level of production in subsequent seasons while dealing with a frustrating run of knee injuries, multiple of which limited him to just 54 games in the 2024-25 campaign. In 2025-26, the first season of his new three-year contract, Zary collected a mere 25 points in 74 games with the Flames.
The Wranglers are slated to return to action on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Mountain to take on the Laval Rocket at the Saddledome. In addition to Zary, the Wranglers will also be without forward William Stromgren and goaltender Arsenii Sergeev, both of whom were recalled by the Flames on Friday.
