Flames Prospects Game Day: A Battle of Alberta rookie rematch (4pm MT, Flames.com)

On Friday night, the Calgary Flames’ prospects visited the Edmonton Oilers’ rookies for a clash at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
The Flames had a slow start, then woke up and dominated much of the rest of the game. Then they sort of let their foot off the gas pedal a bit and held on for dear life, ultimately winning a surprisingly-close 6-5 game.
Well, these two clubs are rematching on Sunday in Calgary at the palatial Scotiabank Saddledome. The Flames will be hoping for a more balanced game with fewer dips. The Oilers will be hoping for a much better overall showing than they had at home to open the weekend.
The game begins at 4 p.m. MT! You can catch the game streamed on the Flames website and on the radio on Sportsnet 960 The Fan! Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster for $10.
The Flames
The Flames were, generally, quite good on Friday by all accounts.
Sure, they had some defensive miscues which led to way too many high-value chances against netminder Owen Say. But if you look at the shape of their game, they scored six goals – one apiece from Hunter Laing, Nathan Brisson, Sam Honzek, Aydar Suniev, Matvei Gridin and Parker Bell – and probably could’ve gotten a few more. Despite having 13 skaters not available due to collegiate or European commitments, there was still oodles of skill on display.
Here’s how they lined up on Friday:
Sam Honzek – Carter King – Aydar Suniev
Parker Bell – Carter Wilkie – Andrew Basha
Jacob Battaglia – David Silye – Matvei Gridin
Kadon McCann – Nathan Brisson – Hunter Laing

The extras on Friday were Jordan Switzer, Colton Alain, Eduard Bondar and Mael Lavigne. They’re all in on tryouts so we’re not sure how many lineup changes we’ll end up seeing, aside from likely seeing Arsenii Sergeev start after Say got the full 60 minutes on Friday.
The Oilers
The Oilers were decent early and pretty good late in the game, but they were on their heels for much of the middle of Friday’s game. And yeah, if you look at the relative draft position of the Oilers’ group compared to the Flames’ group… that’s sort of what you would expect. But the Edmonton kids are proud and they battled and made Friday’s game fairly close, and we suspect we’ll see a better outing from them on Sunday.
Here’s how they looked on Friday:
Isaac Howard – Josh Samanski – Matthew Savoie
Rhett Pitlick – Viljami Marjala – Quinn Hutson
Connor Clattenburg – Matt Copponi – Tommy Lafreniere
Brady Stonehouse – David Lewandowski – James Stefan

The extras on Friday were Connor Ungar, Josh Banini, Hyde Davidson, Andrew O’Neill and William Nicholl. We’ll probably see some changes, but we’ll see how extensive they are.
And, uh, expect some physicality. There were three fights on Friday, and we can probably expect more on Sunday.
