How do the Flames and Oilers prospects training camp rosters compare?

Friends, it’s time for the Battle of Alberta.
Okay, we’ll add a caveat: it’s not the “real” Battle of Alberta. But with the Penticton Young Stars tournament discontinued, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have opted to play a pair of games this weekend as part of each club’s prospects training camp.
So as we prepare for the Flames and Oilers prospects to tangle on Friday in Edmonton (7 p.m. MT start) and Sunday in Calgary (4 p.m. MT start), let’s take a look at which of each club’s top prospects will be suiting up.
First round picks
Flames | Oilers |
Sam Honzek [16th; 2023] Matvei Gridin [28th; 2024] | Matthew Savoie [9th; 2022] Isaac Howard [31st; 2022] |
Not attending: Flames picks Cole Reschny [18th; 2025] and Cullen Potter [32nd; 2025] are in college, while Zayne Parekh [9th; 2024] is being held out for “precautionary reasons.” The Oilers don’t have any recent first-rounders not attending.
Over the past three years, the Oilers have drafted in the first round once… and they subsequently traded that player, 2024 pick Sam O’Reilly, to Tampa Bay when they acquired Isaac Howard earlier this summer. The other first-rounder they have attending is Matthew Savoie, who they acquired from Buffalo. The Oilers are a team in the prime of their contention window, so they can live with a bit of deficit spending if it results in a parade.
Meanwhile, the Flames are on the opposite side of the spectrum: trying to retool their lineup after their contention window slammed shut in 2022. They’ve made five first-round picks in the past three years: Honzek, Parekh, Gridin, Reschny and Potter.
Top 100 picks
Flames | Oilers |
Andrew Basha [41st; 2024] Etienne Morin [48th; 2023] Jacob Battaglia [62nd; 2024] Hunter Brzustewicz [75th; 2023] Aydar Suniev [80th; 2023] Mace’o Phillips [80th; 2025] | Beau Akey [56th; 2023] Tommy Lafreniere [83rd; 2025] |
Not attending: Flames picks Theo Stockselius [54th; 2025] and Kirill Zarubin [84th; 2024] are playing in Europe, while Henry Mews [74th; 2024] is in college. Oilers pick Eemil Vinni [64th; 2024] is playing in Europe.
We see the same sort of pattern for the next grouping as we do for the first-rounders: the Flames have made 13 top-100 picks over the past three years, while the Oilers have made four. The Flames also acquired one, 2023 pick Hunter Brzustewicz, from Vancouver in the Elias Lindholm trade.
As such, yeah, the Flames have more high picks attending this event… and that’s in keeping with them being in a retooling phase.
Other notables
Flames | Oilers |
Carter King [college free agent] | Quinn Hutson [college free agent] Viljami Marjala [European free agent] |
Overall, six of Daily Faceoff’s top 10 Flames prospects are on their camp roster, while seven of the Oilers’ top 10 prospects are suiting up for that side.
It should be a fun weekend as the Flames prospects and Oilers prospects clash on Friday (in Edmonton) and Sunday (in Calgary).
