Flames recall forward Brennan Othmann from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers

In advance of their final game of their lengthy six game homestand, the Calgary Flames have added a new face to their roster. On Saturday morning the club announced that they’ve recalled forward Brennan Othmann from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.
Othmann is a 23-year-old left shot winger. An Ontario product, he played his junior hockey in the OHL with the Flint Firebirds and the Peterborough Petes. He was captain in Flint for two seasons, and spent the OHL’s 2020-21 COVID pause in Switzerland with EHC Olten of the second-tier Swiss League. He was a first-round selection, 16th overall, by the New York Rangers in the 2021 NHL Draft. (The Flames selected Matt Coronato three picks earlier.)
This is the third and final season of Othmann’s entry-level contract. He split time in each of his three seasons with the NHL’s Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack before being traded to the Flames at this year’s trade deadline in exchange for prospect Jacob Battaglia. In 42 NHL games with the Rangers, primarily as a depth forward, Othmann had 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points. In 130 AHL games with the Wolf Pack and the Wranglers, primarily as a top six forward, he has 41 goals and 49 assists for 90 points.
Othmann’s a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and as a newcomer in the organization, it seems pretty prudent for both him and the Flames that he gets a little look-see at the NHL level to see where he’s at relative to the rest of the organization’s forwards. He’s a pretty toolsy forward that can play a pretty fun physical, agitating role, but he wasn’t able to find his niche during his NHL appearances with the Blueshirts. Maybe he can do that with the Flames.
Othmann’s recall uses up the third of the Flames’ five post-trade deadline “regular” call-ups from the Wranglers. And due to the new quirk that only four players can be up at a time on regular recalls after the deadline, the Flames can only bring up one more player on a “regular” recall before they have to start sending players back down. (Also up on regular call-ups right now are Matvei Gridin and Hunter Brzustewicz.)
Othmann’s arrival gives the Flames 26 players on their active roster: two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 16 forwards. (This includes injured players Connor Zary and Yan Kuznetsov.) There is no roster limit after the trade deadline.
The Flames conclude their homestand on Saturday night when they host the Vancouver Canucks.
