Truly bizarre contest tonight. The Lightning had three ES chances in periods one and three combined…and 13 in the second. Flames ran things up in the third while chasing.
Calgary’s first line spent most of the night against the Bolts "checking unit" of Hall, Tyrrel and Thompson and still most got beat-up and 5on5. Jokinen and Jarome scored on the PP, so that’s their redemption on the evening, but this is the second straight game Calgary’s putative top forward unit has been snowed under at ES in terms of possession and chances.
The fourth line was the most consistent trio for Calgary. Morrison’s unit also managed to stay out of the defensive zone pretty well, while Comeau et al were up and down – they gave up a ton in the second period but almost reeled it in in the third.
Finally, the Brodie defensive pairing gave up a lot and Carson still looks a step behind the action to me. Butler’s numbers aren’t terrible, but he had a gruesome evening on the back-end: two T-bay goals went in off of him and the OT marker was scored wihile he was standing and watching the proceedings. He hasn’t been very good recently.
