Calgary was the better team for the first half of the first period, but that’s it. The Canucks eroded the Flames lead gradually and then quietly surpassed them in the second. Flames were chasing in the third, but fruitlessly – VAN shut them right down. They were far superior when it came to special teams as well.
The Iginla line played a lot, but mostly got eaten up in terms of possession and chances. Incredibly, the best Flames unit on the night was Stajan, Jackman and Kostopolous who knocked it out of the park. That’s the first time I’ve said that about a Stajan centered line for a long time. In terms of the back-end, Steve Staios was the most sheltered defender in terms of face-offs tonight and yet he got killed. Steady Steve is fine again certain teams, but agains theavy hitters like tonight he’s going to struggle for sure.
