The Calgary Flames have made their sixth selection of the 2025 NHL Draft. At 208th overall, the Flames have selected Swedish defenceman Jakob Leander from HV71 of the J20 Nationell in Sweden.
Leander is a right shot blueliner listed at 6’4″ and 196 pounds, and he’s a February 2007 birthday. He spent this past season primarily with HV71’s under-20 team, playing 39 games and posting six points. He also suited up for 19 games for their under-18 team.
There’s not a ton of highlights, scouting reports or rants and raves online about Leander, and the scuttlebutt from what we can gather – especially reading between the lines of his rather modest offensive output at the under-18 and under-20 levels – is that he’s a shutdown defender. He was not ranked by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service, nor did he appear anywhere on any of the major draft rankings. Or the minor draft rankings, for that matter.
But in the seventh round, the Flames appear to haven taken a flier on a guy with size and the ability to defend. If nothing else, they probably have some hopes that perhaps Leander can keep growing, fill out a bit more, and find a way to keep translating his game to higher levels. It feels somewhat similar to the selection of Axel Hurtig in 2023, except Hurtig had a bit more high-level and international experience.
