As the Calgary Flames embark upon a weekend road trip to the Central Division, they made a roster move.
The club announced on Friday morning that defenceman Tyson Barrie has been sent to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers on a conditioning loan.
Per the terms of the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreeemnt, Barrie’s loan can last up to 14 days. Since Barrie hasn’t cleared waivers, while he’s on his conditioning loan he will continue to receive his NHL salary and count against the NHL roster limit and salary cap.
The 33-year-old Barrie is a right shot defenceman who attended Flames training camp on a professional try-out agreement and then signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal with the club. He was signed to help bolster the club’s power play, but he was scratched in November when the coaching staff reconfigured the power play into two balanced units and he hasn’t gotten back into the lineup since.
This season with the Flames, Barrie has played nine games and has one goal and one assist for two points. Over his 818 game NHL career, he has 110 goals and 397 assists for 507 points. He’s a power play specialist right now, and there doesn’t seem to be an obvious spot for him on the Flames’ power play at present, so he’s been a healthy spectator for the past few months.
The Wranglers have four games over the next two weeks. They play Saturday and Sunday at home against San Diego, then play next Friday and Saturday in Abbotsford. It’s probably reasonable to expect that as long as Barrie remains on his conditioning loan, we’ll see him suit up with the Wranglers in those contests.
From there, we’ll see what happens with Barrie.
