When the teams hit the ice for pre-game warm-up in advance of Saturday’s matinee between the Calgary Flames and New York Islanders, all eyes were on the lookout for Rasmus Andersson – and wondering whether or not he would even dress for the Flames given all the trade chatter in recent days.
Well, Andersson did dress, and he set up the game’s opening goal in the first period, scored by Yegor Sharangovich.
Andersson’s appearance in the lineup had many onlookers wondering, “Hey, why is Andersson playing if he might get traded soon?” During the first intermission of Sportsnet’s broadcast of Flames/Islanders, Elliotte Friedman answered that very question from his colleague David Amber. (Amber phrased the question more eloquently, but that was the gist of it.)
Here’s what Friedman had to say:
Well basically the way it is, is a lot of people heard a lot of noise overnight about what may be happening with Rasmus Andersson. And I think the Bruins stuff is very real. I think they are very interested. But there are two things that have to be satisfied. Number one, it’s gotta be a trade that the Flames are happy with. And number two, there’s gotta be an extension that the Bruins have in their pocket. They are not willing to do this trade, at the current price, unless they have an extension. And we’re obviously not there right now.
I also do believe that Vegas is very involved. Don’t forget, the Golden Knights tried to trade for Rasmus Andersson last year around the draft. They weren’t able to get it done. One of the issues there, I believe, is that I don’t think the Golden Knights, as I understand it, can put together as good a package as the Bruins can, at least not at this time. But I do think the Golden Knights are very confident that if they want to extend Andersson, they will be able to do it.
So, we don’t have agreement on both those things, and that’s why he’s still in the lineup.
Andersson is in the final year of a six year deal with a $4.55 million cap hit. He’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and reports are that he and the Flames aren’t close on a new contract. More recent reports are suggesting that he’ll be traded before the Feb. 4 Olympic trade freeze.
