Daniil Miromanov entered the last season of his contract this year and needed to establish himself and set himself apart with the Calgary Flames if he were to remain at the NHL level. Miromanov has had split seasons between the NHL and AHL pretty much his whole professional career but this season was a much more AHL focused year for the 28 year old right shot defenceman.
That doesn’t mean the season went to waste by any means as he found success in the AHL and was someone his teammates could lean on. Especially the young Russian ones.
Expectations
Miromanov played his longest season in the NHL in 2024-25 playing in 44 games, putting up two goals and seven assists. His biggest call-out going into this season was consistency and with young blood in the organization, especially on the right side, he’d have to get to work early. If Miromanov were to spend some time in the AHL, it seemed like he and Yan Kuznetsov would be the go-to options to call up in the event of an injury on the back end.
Performance
The Flames realized early this year that Miromanov’s play wasn’t up to what they were looking for after just one game. He played in the fourth game of the season against the Vegas Golden Knights and was put on waivers for the purpose of AHL assignment shortly after. Miromanov cleared and played with the Wranglers for the rest of the season. While it’s safe to say he was passed by on the blue line in the NHL by guys like Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz, he still had an offensive presence in the AHL that allowed him to be a veteran presence for other prospects.
Miromanov finished the season with 66 games played with the Wranglers and 38 points. He had 11 goals and 27 assists and a plus/minus of minus-6. Miromanov was credited with one power play goal and one game winning goal and had a 13 point lead on the next closest Wranglers defender in scoring. He was highly leveraged in high danger situations, on the penalty kill and in overtime as the go-to started and they won games because of it.
Outlook
The Wranglers, like the Flames, also struggled this year and did not qualify for post-season play. Despite their results and down moments in the season, Miromanov still emphasized that he enjoyed every single day of the season. His role included some guidance for other Russian players on the team like Matvei Gridin, Aydar Suniev, Artem Grushnikov and Arsenii Sergeev and that might be one of the biggest successes of his season. He talked about his season and said at season ending interviews:
“I thought it was great for the most part. I stayed healthy, it’s the most important part to me and just tried to lead the way in some of the situations. Just support the guys. It was a big Russian group so just tried to show the guys the way and help out whenever they needed some help.”
Daniil Miromanov’s immediate future is one that’s already coming to shape at this point in the off-season. Early reports have come out in the last few days that he plans on signing in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg. He is an unrestricted free agent and the choice really is his on where he’d like to take his career as it didn’t seem like the Flames organization was continuing down the path with him for next season. Miromanov did a great job with the Wranglers and on a down year for him professionally, he still managed to lift others up.
